Title: NEW FORUM SOFTWARE
Post by: zaqrack on July 14, 2006, 09:15:58 PM
Well

it was finally time to change from phpbb due to the lack of nice features, and the increasing spamming.
we have switched to SMF, another free software.

It's completely new for me too, so I need some time to get used with it. Guess the same goes for you.
If you have any problems or requests, or encounter any errors, please post them here.

Thanks,
Zak

Interesting :) I must admit I was quite surprised when I pressed the refresh button :)

Let's hope this style is better than the previous (which was good)

no, it was worse, too big letters and graphics. I switched back, but of course everyone can change it for himself. The other theme (DilberMC) has 12 color variations.

Oh, and a nice feature, especially for CTG:

Good thing is that you managed to keep the phpBB forum database.
We'll need some time to get use of it...

edit : and why this massage is not in "forum bgfixes" topic ? ;D

Nothing special, something you earn by getting posts.
Green and red stars mark moderators and administrators.

Zak : it seems file attachement feature is not implemented on this new forum.
All previous attached docs disappeared... :-[

Zak! I cannot rebirth! When I log in as "JTK" I can't see messages, I can't modify my profile. I just can read the latest messages sent and else do nothing...  :( Why?  ???

attachment feature now works fine (just press additional options when posting), as you can see it in this message, but it could happen that the previously attached files were not imported of course.

attachment max size is 128k per attachemtn, 256k per post
avatar max size is 100x100 pixel but there is an automatic resize routine installed if the pic is bigger.

that's strange, I don't know yet what the problem is.

But you can change your name displayed, so if it won't work out your mighty Ghost can change name to simply JTK and I can modify the post counts... (and kill the old JTK  ;D)

You have to do this first, I guess. I cannot change the displayed name because the nich already exists (of course!)  :-[

Sorry, but I don't see anything in this topic. Was there supposed to be an attachement ? ???

And there's no option about attachement on additional options... :-\

edit : on wacky/beauty replay contest, I can see the attachement.

I don't think Child Boards are a good idea, because you can't see when there are new posts. There is no reason not to let them be boards on the same terms as the rest.

Oh it sucks. No vomiting icon. :D

Seriously, I liked the old design a bit better. But this new one has many useful options for number addicts like me. I would prefer the mixture of them. :)

when child boards have new messages it's also marked on the left side, and shown at the right side, not only from the parent boards

If the Forum ghosts problem caused it, see my post in Monthly updated forum stats topic. They are deleted. I think 20 posts/day and 70 posts/week can be a realistic limit.

no way I'd do that, but I can install a mod which can set daily post limit by users.
CTG=20 ghosts=1. Problem solved. But I'll do that only when its really necessary...

Not really... 20 daily posts limit is 600/monthly. CTG posts only half of that, so it will result on him spamming even more, just to reach the limit. Maybe a 25-30 posts/week can be a reasonable limit to everybody.
Title: Re: NEW FORUM SOFTWARE
Post by: CTG on January 24, 2008, 08:50:02 AM
I said 20 posts/day AND 70 posts/week. Double limit. If I post 60 messages between Monday and Wednesday, I have only 10 left for the next 4 days. Okay, it can be decreased to 50 posts/week. 25-30 messages/week is not enough, even you, Krys and sometimes BJ and Akoss used to post more than that!
Title: Re: NEW FORUM SOFTWARE
Post by: Duplode on January 24, 2008, 05:08:55 PM
30 messages/week might be little in certain circumstances indeed (what would be of flamewars then?!  :P). Maybe hourly limits (something like 8 posts/hour, 12 posts/3 hours or whathever other more suitable numbers) could be easier to tune in order to prevent flood without restricting normal usage. I'd rather see the custom, user-specific, "emergency measures" Zak proposed, however...

PS: Sticking to the topic, post #300...  ;D
Edit/PS2: ROFL! Chulk reached post #1000 on this discussion as well!

due to the recent spamming I have strengthened the registration rules and of course deleted the spam accounts. Hope it'll help.
Title: Re: NEW FORUM SOFTWARE
Post by: zaqrack on June 13, 2011, 10:05:55 AM
Since a couple of months accounts must get approval from an admin before they can be activated due to the high number of bots / spammers registering on the site. Is there anyone familiar with the SMF forum engine / plugins who could help me solve this problem?

Preauthorization works to keep spammers away, but it also keeps interested pipsqueaks joining discussions as they wish.

Title: Re: NEW FORUM SOFTWARE
Post by: Oscar on June 13, 2011, 03:00:47 PM
I think the best way to prevent access to the spammers is to implement some field validation is not an existing plugin, it could also work well show another system or alternate systems capcha randomly.
Title: Re: NEW FORUM SOFTWARE
Post by: zaqrack on June 13, 2011, 04:47:47 PM
captcha and email activation is already present. I will try to add more.
I am afraid these are not bots but real people who have the job to register on forums and then send spam.
Title: Re: NEW FORUM SOFTWARE

A crazy idea! We can add the stunts security system... same responses, if somebody wants to register must search the response.
Title: Re: NEW FORUM SOFTWARE
Post by: zaqrack on June 15, 2011, 05:33:18 AM
Crazy, but good!
I will search for a plugin which allows to add user-defined questions as a registration requirement - we could define questions which all Stunts-fans know, but is hard for others to find out. Like: Who is the fastest opponent in Stunts? What is the fastest car in Stunts?

Nice new look for the forum. Too bad that SMF forums are now as spammed as phpbb ones...
Anyway, such an evolution since the old green one with mandatory ads you had at the very beginning (which got replaced by a phpbb one and then the SMF one).  :o
