Title: NEC PC-9801 version of Stunts
Post by: Krys TOFF on March 03, 2008, 10:33:08 AM
As you may have seen, a guy named Dstien (and not DStein for Doctor Stein as I though first :D) has implemented infos in the wiki regarding this version, which I never heard of before.
Link : http://wiki.stunts.hu/index.php/Game_versions

So, I looked for it on the web and found this video of the intro, very similar to FM Towns version except for the colors, as told by DStein in the wiki.
Video link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_V4PD614j0

I'd like to have it and test it too, although I don't know if it's possible to play it natively under current PCs, with DOSBox or with any other emulator.

edit : I just saw that Dstien has joined the forum. I hope to talk about this version here with him. ;)

PC-9801 emulator for Windows is named Neko Project II.
Official website : http://www.yui.ne.jp/np2/

Adaptation of this emulator for Mac, Windows CE and PSP also exists, I found nothing for Linux users.

T98-Next is better than Neko Project 2 in terms of emulation

DOSBox-X can emulate the PC-9801. It is the most convenient option for Linux I could find so far. I don't know how it compares with the Windows emulators.

The wiki mentioned a tournament mode in this version...
But I see no information about it.

This version really has tournament mode, but the only difference between practice and tournament mode is that in tournament mode you have TRACK_00 to TRACK_04.TRK to race on. But in practice mode, you have the "vanilla" tracks, and also can challenge an opponent. DEFAULT.TRK has some changes, like there's no slalom in the beginning of the track, and the elevated road part is shortened by two blocks

I had that version of the default track on my red sector cracked copy about 20 years ago.
It's easier to drive. So possibly edited the same way for the same reason.

There's more to it to Torunament Mode. Once you beat those five tracks, five new tracks become available, and so forth.

I know that. Just didn't see any documentation for running it on modern systems.
Or do I need to run it in dosbox?

Dosbox-x seems to support pc98 if this machine is selected in the dosbox config, but i dont know how mature the support is, i would ask on dosbox-x github page

Neko Project II kai seems to be the most active: https://github.com/AZO234/NP2kai

O, guess i didn't exactly know that.
I found a much newer version but haven't installed it yet.

QuoteT98-Next 20100525
After an 8-year hiatus, Yuki tweaked his T98-Next emulator, improving compatibility with Windows Vista/7 and making some other fixes. A third-party CD-ROM module is available, but outdated. Emulation is fast. Japanese interface.
This version still has some issues - if you have problems, try the 20100523 version or the 13.1th Beta version.

The newer version is supposed to be faster, but I can't get it to work properly (my Japanese is terrible, so that might be an issue)
I found out how the version posted by GTAMan18 works by trail and error.
That runs good.

Couple of things I noticed.
The game race engine renders interlaced at first, in the options menu there is a 'color fill' option.
Sound is very different. (obviously) but besides the remake of the stunts' song (more pop verses the Rock version we know)
Check https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL7jnur5u_w (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL7jnur5u_w)
Also, the FX are quite clearly instruments, engine is trumpet like, skidding is a violin or so. Not irritating, but noticeable.
In tournament mode, you can watch a replay after you crash, but you can't rewind and continue racing. That option is not available.
Thus, noRH in tournament mode.
In tournament mode only 8 of 11 cars are available. The slowest 3 are no longer listed.
In tournament mode at track selection, the Edit track button is disabled.
And they converted Mph to KM/h almost everywhere.
The game graphics are different, but also for some track elements. The pipe has a different color scheme.
The default car is the Acura and not the Lamborghini.

From the youtube (by GTAman) i can tell that the maximum driving time is 25 minutes.

I'll try this one later. (IIRC PC98 Stunts on DOSBox-X had an annoying issue with pause and/or replays back when I last tried it in February.)

Can anyone extract the files from the game images?
I'm curious about the changes,
It seems there are 2 main menus, 1 practice and 1 tournament.
But many of the game-menu mechanics are different to.
so I wonder if they made switches in the code that see the game mode or if they did something else.

It could give us insight in how the game works in general.

Maybe we can make a version of DOS stunts that can save replays in "tournament mode" but not in "practice mode" (if we add the modes)
and allow RH in practice mode but not in tournament mode. (it has been tried before, I know, just thinking out loud again)

EDIT:
I'm not at my pc, so i can't test this. But I found a list of tools for many types of disk images.
http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/921 (http://dmweb.free.fr/?q=node/921) How to extract files from floppy disk or CD-ROM images under Windows
Might be useful.

EDIT2:
I've done some playing and saved a replay in practice and one in tournament mode.
There is a clear difference. So if we can read the tournament mode replay then we could have a noRH (GAR?) competition by using the PC-98 version and replacing the tournament tracks.

I extracted all files from the 6 disk images provided by GTAman.
I've uploaded those to my freshly created Mega.

I'll upload more stuff there (the Amiga version with emulator and extracted files for example)
So the versions can be compared.

I compared the files of this version and the FM-towns version.
(just by cover, can't open them in a way that i can find anyhing usefull)

But although they are released with the same changes (tournament mode)
the files are very different. It looks like the FM-towns version has separate graphic files for the tournament menus and the normal menu's.
While the PC-98 version does not.
PC-98 has for instance : SDMSEL.PVS
FM-Towns has these: SDMSEL.RFS and SDMSEL.RVS

Stressed can not open the packed files.

It wasn't a question, but I still have an answer.

No we can not have a noRH competition this way. There is a way around it.
Mainly because the replays are compatible with each other and with DOS stunts 1.1..

race tournament race.
Safe replay as TPL,
change extention to RPL
Load replay in practice mode
DO RH
Safe RPL in practice mode,
Change extention back to TPL
Load replay  in tournament mode,
Safe replay in tournament mode (to get the difference data in)

and you have succesfully cheated a noRH race

Title: Re: NEC PC-9801 version of Stunts
Post by: Daniel3D on September 30, 2021, 10:11:48 AM
The positive side is that the PC-98 version and stunts 1.1 are technically quite similar. (same game engine)

So we could learn from the source code if we reverse it to.
Does not have to be completely dissected like the one we have for stunts, just the menu buildup and structure.
Maybe the save replay code, so we can make an incompatible replay and have noRH.

It could be easier to just disable continue driving and change the save replay code and just make a separate version.

Actually, we already raced in Hugaroring in zakstunts as special event in august 2002 (P03 track). We all met in an irc chat and it was a live race for about 15 minutes. It was fun.
