Title: Böhm-Kalpen-Maass
Post by: JTK on March 14, 2008, 03:09:48 PM
Three old friend making some music for their own fun: http://www.boehm-kalpen-maass.de
This year we'll perform our first gig with this band (we already did, having another band then, back in 1989 - 1990 :-X)

I finally got around to listening to some Böhm/Kalpen/Maass...  You've got a great energy in your music and also nice humour (it shines through that you were really alive and having a lot of fun playing these songs!). Even so, some of the best stuff seems to be the more quiet songs, like Valley of Unrest and Nacht. But that's because I'm an emotion-whore and I'm missing some emotion in the rockier songs. But it's energetic rock, not meant for excessive emotion :)

Hey emotion-whore, thanks! So don't hesitate and rush to Lübeck on September 6th to see and hear us live - with even more sensitive stuff, oh yes!  :)

I like Mangrove. Good potential background music for a Stunts video. ;)
Else, my other favorite is So isses. I'm not so emotion-whore, I like it when it rocks. ;D

You've got some pretty nice music... interestingly I would point as personal favourites Valley of Unrest and Nacht, the same as BJ although maybe for different reasons - the buildup of tension in those seemingly quiet pieces Is quite effective. And it's really cool you've got a deal, the best of luck to y'all! :)

I hope your concert went really well!

I wasn't there in reality, but I was certainly there in the dream I just had.
I found myself in the concert hall, just as the band was about to play. JTK saw me on the floor and beckoned me to come up on the stage. Then they began to play, and I just oddly stood on one side of the stage. They were playing warm-up to some other act, and I was always annoyed because the people in the crowd stood at the sides and nobody was in the middle. Then the band went through their songs and more people slowly arrived. It wasn't until they played Basquadrat that people really got into it though. This song was very heavy and driven by loud distortion guitars, and suddenly the middle of the floor was filled up. BKM went on to play a Rolling Stones cover, but unfortunately I've forgotten which one. Then the show ended and JTK promised to show me the way back to Denmark. So we went walking around some very deserted country roads. I said "I need to get to Kruså", but none of us remembered exactly where on the border that was, so we just kept walking around these empty roads. When we passed under a telephone line, I said "look! A horizontal telephone line!", JTK said "yes, aren't they all horizontal?" and I said, "no, in Denmark they are vertical." I also told him that I thought the best part of the show was when they played Basquadrat, because that really rocked. At one point we looked at a map and it turned out we were in southern Germany, which was quite unnerving to me. Then suddenly I felt bad about taking up JTK's time, so I said "hey, you are supposed to go and party with Felyx and Detlev!" he said "well, I've told them I'd come at 7 o'clock", looked at his watch and it was half past six, so he left. I kept walking and tried to look at some signs, and eventually I made it back to Denmark, although it was the wrong place. I wondered why they hadn't played any quiet songs, but concluded they must have, but I must have been asleep during them and woken up when they ended. I finally arrived at a motorway (and suddenly had a car), so I began driving, but I drove horribly. I was always skidding in the curves, entering way too fast, and scaring the other drivers. At one point I had to drive up a really steep, small hill, and failed. So instead, I sat on the back of one of my friends (who was very reluctant to carry me), and he ran with me up the hill. Then I woke up.

BJ: It wasn't a dream, it was reality! ;)

Oh it was really great. Each place in northern Germany was as rainy as can be except Lübeck - so we really played open air. Our friends went crazy through the concert, throwing with underwear and toy animals, holding posters like "We all want a child from you" and things like that. We played from 20:00 until 10:30 and it was a big party. People danced, drank far too much (4 women passed out!) and sung with us. I want more!!! :) :) :)

Will try to spread the word and make a fan base in Hungary :)

Whats more, your music attracted me back to listening German music sang in German. I have -well, gathered- albums from quite many new German bands and listen to them. Andi previously could not stand me listening to German songs, but now she asks me to play for example Wir sind Helden often.

Let's do the favourite songs thing... I have two favourite songs: Der Ausbrecher and Venito.  I wish I had some mountains to go into when I'm tired of the city life. Well, I have some forests and some lakesides and some beaches. But it's not the same.
Also favourites: Welthit and Valley Of Unrest. But I really like nearly every song. Even Hop. I was a bit like "why do you want to do hip-hop?" earlier, but the new version kicks more ass.

Let's see:
I like Der Ausbrecher a lot as well. It inherits a lot from the traditional German song style but also has the required unique characteristics. Nacht is an all-time classic.
And I love JTK's face on the back cover  ;D
Andi likes der Schokoladenmann the most :)

I was thinking on Bierhof-Musik if such a term exists. Well if it doesn't, I just created it :)
So the music played in beer tents for example. A bit country like, a bit like nothing else.
Ausbrecher resembles this music for me a bit. :)

JTK, now I want to know: what does "eingegrünt" mean??

I liked the word so much I used it in a text I wrote, without even knowing what it means. Please let it be something dark and mysterious. Thanks.
Title: Re: Böhm-Kalpen-Maass
Post by: zaqrack on January 19, 2010, 12:45:55 PM
something like: "totally turned to green by the hands of something else"

but perhaps JTK can explain it clearer :)
Title: Re: Böhm-Kalpen-Maass
Post by: JTK on January 20, 2010, 08:45:03 AM
Well... that's athing I love about German language. It's very easy to invent words and that word is my invention like most of the words in the "Eingegrünt" lyrics. Eingegrünt could be translated with "intensively turned INTO green". The idea behind the song was a very old factory, not working anymore, built of bricks. Imagine an old, abandoned factory brick house being reconquered by nature, roots, mushrooms, plants slowly but inexorably overgrowing and destroying the building - it becomes eingegrünt. 8)

I love the lyrics (of course, they're mine ;D) and I tried to arrange the words in a way, that the semantic intense ascends through the verses to climax in the word "Grüüüüüün!" Here the whole lyrics:

EINGEGRÜNT

I.
Eingegrünt
Sporenflug
Algenfall
Flechtenwuchs
Erdenpilz
Gräsertrieb
WURZELSCHLAG

II.
Mauerknoten
Verwittert
Zerpflanzt
Verkrautet
Rindenbraun
Verrankt
Mörtelbruch
Blätterwerk
VERGRÜNT

III.
Wickenwuchs
Vergirscht
Verwittert
Zerkrautet
Verrankt
Schalenkern
Borkenkranz
Unterholz
Knospenbruch
Verrottet
Verwachsen
Verholzt
Mörtelbruch
Verastet
GRÜN!

Title: Re: Böhm-Kalpen-Maass
Post by: JTK on August 01, 2010, 05:12:00 PM
 :D :D
So what do you want to know? This line says everything. Jeder Arsch hat eine NAse. This is so damned hard to explain. Beside the original meaning of Arsch (like "ass") this beautiful word has more connotations: It is - of course - a swearing word and can be also be used as a friendly "Du Arsch", when someone mocked you. There also is this thing called "Arschgesicht", you should not say that to people instead you're on the search of getting in some nice trouble.. So putting all of this together:

"Jeder Start hat einen Anfang" (which was the original line of the song as we thought of how can a song start - oh, of course, with the beginning),
"Jedes Ziel hat seinen Weg" Ah. First the start, then the end and also the way towards it.
"Jeder Arsch hat eine Nase" Each Start, each end, now each f*cking person going it.
"Mal ist sie grad, mal ist ist sie schräg" Everyone is an individual (I'm not!).
"Wenn es einmal Steine regnet" Oooh, dangerous! Could be a warning of thrown stones by revolutionists? Or just a picture of the hard world outside which makes you getting hurt and you can just do nothing against it? It's your interpretation now...
"Sing ich immer noch mein Lied" This being the last thing to do in life. Like the Titanic band, playing their music even though the ship is sinking at the same moment

"Finger gleiten über Saiten" Oh yes, that's what we are doing singing this song and the bass line underlines this with a nice sliding twirl (and I like the inner "ei" "ei" rhyme).
"Und der Sand verrinnt wie Zeit" A turnover picture: Normally a German phrase is "Die Zeit verrinnt wie Sand) (which comes from an hour glass).
"Du siehst Bronzekrieger reiten" This picture is from the chinese army figures but here made of bronze to be even more martial
"Über Streit herrscht Einigkeit" The only thing everyone seems to agree: Fight has to be made.
"Wenn die feigen Blätter welken" Oh well. As a German you hear "Feigenblätter". You know, fig leafs are often displayed covering Adam & Eve's genitals. But why now "feige Blätter" = "coward leaves"? Hmmm...
"Sing ich immer noch mein Lied". Yap.

"Weißen Schwarze scharfe Wände" Hah, that came out of my head at a very late hour. It's total nonsense because what are "sharp walls"? And why do black people have to paint them white? That will hurt. Again, Germans do hear another lyrics in their ears: "Weißen schwarze Schafe Wände" like" white sheep are painting white walls" and do not understand a word anymore. Like I do.
"Ich sing immer noch mein Lied" And will hopefully never stop. :-)

Now your interpretation, Sirs  8)

Why, yes :-) I'm listening to it a lot these days. Wir Gehn an Bord is still my favourite song, but all of them are good. I think Detlev's vocal performance is very good this time and has more energy than on Venito. I'm not sure why you put another version of Venito on the album which sounds very much like the old one, but hey it's a really good song.
About the bass: great basslines on Das blaue Licht!
Also, this album is all killer and no filler. Venito had two songs that weren't on the same level as the rest of the album in my opinion.
On a song like Meeresrausch, well, you're singing about 80's-style Baywatch beach-idealism, and I really hate that, but still I appreciate that you do it really well. I really feel like I'm there on the beach with the hot bikini girl.

Once again, listening to Böhm Kalpen Maass makes me happy!

Thanks for the critics, BJ, I really appreciate that.

The cited line is "Und ich scheiß auf Wikileaks!" which means in rude words that "I" don't give a damn on Wikileaks. I really have to bring the lyrics online, especially for this song, which is constructed in that way, that the listener first thinks it it about a love story. :-)

At the moment there's no way to get our music online. We're right now dealing with a company, who offers to sell music via iTunes etc. etc. but still the dealing is done and not yet finished. But... --> PM

Regarding the fact, that Dedl, KHR an me wrote this song after the consumption of some litres of beer, half a bottle of Gin, a bottle of Wodka and several spills of wine... not bad at all, our "Schlager", isn't it? When we presented the song to Felix the first time he was like "not seriously, are you???".  ;D ;D ;D

Erm... - what is FLAC?
FLAC = Free Lossless Audio Codec. This is the only good way to share digital music : free, open-source, non-proprietary, non-destructive format. FLAC files are usually a little bit less big than WAV files, meaning they are ~8 to 10 times bigger than MP3 or OGG files. This is the "cost" for quality digital music. ;)

Back to the topic meaning : how many albums/mini-albums have you recorded now ? 8)

- 1 EP and two LP Releases with Böhm-Kalpen-Maass, 2 singles (only available as download) (http://www.boehm-kalpen-maass.de/musik.htm)
- Next year we'll be recording a heavy metal/hard rock EP with our new project "Semen of the Drone" (which is BKM without Felix). We just finished the test recordings. :-)

- Oh, and I forgot "Strandsalon", a very experimental chillout track, released as a single by Felix and me: http://www.lastfm.de/music/Electro+Brothers/_/Strandsalon?ac=strandsalon

I think your records age well. They're what I call "real music", made from real emotions (whatever they may be - in the case of BKM mainly joy and longing and masculine energy I guess) and exhibiting a joy at playing music.

I'm also reminded of Böhm Kalpen Maass when listening to my latest album discovery - The Blue Album by the legendary Russian group Akvarium. Even though the songs and the emotions are very different, there's the same sense of uncontrived expression and the joy of music.

I also like a lot of songs and album that don't have this quality, which I love for other reasons, but when you have this quality it's nearly always worth listening to.

It was from Sextus Propertius, from "Sexti Properti Elegiarum Liber II" #XXII, the first six verses; to be found here:

This is the German translation of the first six lines we used, but I guess, it won't help you:

I've found this English translation:

Say " No! " if thou art unkind; or, if kind thou art, then come!
But why take delight in waste of random words?
His grief alone of all doth rack the lover's heart,
if his mistress fails his hopes and comes not to the tryst.
What sighs shake his frame as he tosses o'er all his couch,
when the thought that now some unknown lover is admitted torments him [even to death!]
