Title: HELLO MY GREAT FRIENDS
Post by: Marco on December 31, 2014, 04:27:28 PM
Hi,
sorry for my english ... first of all super Congrats. I'm from Italy and I found this site today ... it's great to see so many great stunts players in the same competition .  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm from the very old school, begin to play with Pc at the beginning in the early eighties. I have an original copy of Stunts 1.1 (european ver. 4d Sports Driving) that I still use today on a 486dx2 and, in the nineties, I have made a lot of tracks that I still have today (some tracks needed 15 minutes to be completed , without cutting I mean :).

I have checked your competition rules and have seen the replay joes4 and it's difficult for me to accept them ;)) I have always looked for "real life" inside the games so my competition rules are to try to simulate real races... not cut on the grass, no pass through walls or through loops, no save replays to do not waste best sectors laps :)).  As you correctly explained, after a jump you can speed up your car but there's also another "semi random" glitch that could happen after a jump...it's another little bounce that,if happen,it could increase your speed more if still not at the max speed after the first main jump. If there's a long straight after the jump, the 2nd lucky bounce  could really make the difference. Then , if i have to be in a competition, i try to make tracks that reduce the possibility to keep advantage from jumps that basically means to insert a turn close to the jump :)).

Recently I have made a friendly challenge with the Delta on a short track named "HILL" that you can find on my youtube channel  "Marco Plays Dos Games" .
here the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYmfRcizqVc

Here the track
http://www.4shared.com/rar/dBOi1BPUce/STUNTS11-HILL.html

I saw some replays, you are really great players, I would like to see you race with my rules :)))

Thank you my friends

Hello and welcome!

I tried to download your track, but the 4shared website is a mess of advertisement, log-in and counters -I couldn't get the file. Can you attach the track here on the forum instead? Thanks!

Edit: there, I went tortuous ways and managed to download the HILL track - I've attached it below.

Hello, Marco!

We've had competitions with those rules. The rule about staying on the road is known as "OWOOT" ("One wheel on/over track"), and the rule about not saving or rewinding replays is known as "noRH" ("No replay handling"). It's a bit difficult because there's no way to check if someone is tampering with the replay.

Did we ever have an OWOOT noRH competition? I've forgotten.

Sort of. JACStunts was OWOOT+noRH, though it didn't use videos.

Ohhh Wow my friends !!! ... thanks for the fast reply !!! So my tag words are "OWOOT+noRH" ?

Is There a championship ???  :))) To match this 2 tags at their best , are necessary particular tracks without too many special jumps and tricks ... basically there's need of F1 tracks :)))

Very nice way to begin the new year with a stunts gaming session :))). Have you seen my youtube channel? I play all dos games on original hardware. You can find me also on Facebook. Thanks !  ... I have downloaded all your beautiful cars ... Using your tutorial tecnique I could fast inprove my test session on the default track but I'm still almost 1.5 seconds far from your video lap time 1.53.80 . I set a 1.55.1 But I have to admit that I have used the replay trick and that's not valid for my score board :)))

Hi my friends...Very great to know that I could stay in the competition with you. :))). Yes I ran without Replay "trick" and on real hardware 486dx2 with crt philips monitor, so no dosbox in this race . In this challenge , we were only 2 players and decided to play only one hour and then share the video on youtube before  the midnight so that we could know in that moment who was the winner . I understand your point about your championship with the replay "trick" and the cut , it's the easyest way to run with no "honest" problems, no checks to do about tires on road and the final result is the "absolute" best time possible in that stunts circuit... the replays are also  the easiest files to send compare to a video... etc.etc.

Anyway it's too frustrating for my busy life ... and also for my game life. I play almost all dos games since 1982. since the beginning . No too much time only for Stunts. :)) If you have some challenge NoRH , tires on road and no wall, loop etc, tricks , I would very please to run  :)))

I tried it now, only few races

Don't like very much the snow but it's funny  :)) .

I have to study better the track, anyway with NoRH and without cutting but anyway avoiding the spiral loop, I easy reach 1.40.15 making some important mistakes: No good first corner, no good chicane end, etc.etc..  So i think that I can catch the 3rd place in the next trials that's almost only 1 second better. Don't know right now about the 2nd place . Surely Alan Rotoi lap time is on another planet  :)))

Ohh, thanks i will check the replay , to easyer understand the track. Next days, now time to sleep in Italy.

Anyway, when you can,  race it without Replay so that we can compare .

Well, if you can beat 1.16.05 in the Jaguar XJR9 on the track ZCT59 with noRH (but cuts allowed), you're my new Stunts hero.

Also, there's Default. My record following the road is 1.01.15 (Indy).

OMG ... I downloaded ZCT59 replays ... my friends, you are crazy :)))

Give me a track, give me a noRH, no cuts, no tricks record and I will try to do my best ... But Hurry up, I'm almost 40 and I'm losing reaction time every day:). Some months ago I have challenged the young myself Marco 1993 version with Test Drive 2 the Duel because I have found in a old floppy my 1993 records.I recorded the entire California scenery, I was behind till the last section. That young boy was faster than me but he has no one to challenge so was more conservative in the last sections :))) . Here if you are interested :).

Yes, ZCT59's replays are great :-) But we also had a noRH contest on that track, in which the winning time was 1.16. But that was with cuts. The only noRH/no-cuts time I have is Default.

But "1.01.15" is your NoRH, no Cuts "Default" lap time ?

I saw on youtube the 1.01.65 by masterCTG and I thought that was a Robot to drive the car :). To be honest i have still also to understand how he turned in fifth gear in one turn. I have always used the third for large turns thinking that skid was the limit.

1, It's not noRH. It was done with ~5 minutes of replay handling.
2, Unfortunately it wasn't me. The mysterious Stig drove that lap (see Stunts Top Gear topic).

WOW !!! That's a super Record ... This probably means that you race comfortable in ? 1.03 or .04? Have you some replays of these NORh records or,if not, it's good also an actual replay to see how you drive on this circuit with the Indy? I saw that you approach the jumps or loop elements with a specify behaviour looking always for the best way because they could be used to increase the performance.  For example I saw that you hit the inside wall at the beginning of the double streets element to jump a bit increasing speed.   I have never played taking care of the elements, I have always been concentrated on turns etc. but i have also seen by your replays that sometimes the behaviour of some cars permits to turn faster with high gear then using a lower gear skiding ... I have always played alone and found some limits that now I'm discovering that are not limits.  About my Hill track, my second lap time was 1.24.95 , the .30 was really good it seems . I'm curious to know what can you do with the Indy on the hill ... I wil try too.

No, I don't drive 1.03-1.04 comfortably. In order to even get below 1.05 on Default noRH, you have to take a lot of risks. If you take all the risks and succeed, you end up at 1.01. You have to: 1. Spin into power gear in the corkscrew and still be able to do the following corner at a high speed. 2. Jump the edge of the boulevard wall. 3. Do the subsequent corner into the chicane at max RPM (4th gear) without breaking. 4. Break late from power gear on the bridge. 5. Do all the corners at high speeds.

I just raced Default noRH for 15 minutes and was unable to even finish a lap. Of course I'm very rusty, but still, it shows the risks you have to take.

Ohhh, Very please to know that Joe :) I have never run so much with the indy so I had no a clear old record on the default. I have always prefered cars slow like the Delta or the Audi. Anyway yesterday I have tried some laps without using the elements , so no spin into power gear and no jump the edge and I set a 1.07.35 thinking that I could lower to 1.06 because of some mistakes but, obviously never reach the a 1.01 .  Anyway I would like to see a replay where you manage the elements at your best so to understand what you have discovered playing Stunts at the max. Anyway for my point of view , if you play Stunts in noRH , has no much sense try to use the elements as power up... prohibit them in a competition it will be much more real life simulation and less frustrating...no fantasy crash on the wall of the last edge after a perfect lap :)))

Thanks CTG I will check soon

I don't quite get the idea of trying to imitate real-life racing. Are we also not allowed to brake in the air then?
The game is called Stunts. Using the elements in creative ways to gain an advantage seems like an obvious idea.

Brad Gour and Don Mattrick where the kings of the 2d driving simulators of the Accolade. When test drive 3 (3d) came out they were no more working for Accolade and that's probably the reason why TD3 is almost unplayable. But they made Stunts, a very great game and if TD3 had the gameplay of Stunts probably would be remembered as one of the greatest drving simulator instead to be remembered as a great graphics but impossible to drive simulator :).

As correctly said by Joe, The name is Stunts but when Brad and Don created the Loop element, i'm quite sure that they didn't think that the name Stunts was meaning to pass it through the grid as a stargate;). For my point of view, this is not take advantage of an element, this is take advantage of a bug, as to pass through the wall obstacle or jump on the wall edge .
Anyway if everyone decide to pass through the loop stargate is not a so big problem for a competition because it 's the same for everyone. The problem on Stunts, in my opinion, are the Jumps and speed up, because they could have a randomly behavior not always defined by your skills (if I'm wrong correct me). I have attached my record and replay of the ROK2 to show you what I mean, pay attention to the 2nd jump land .

Said that , If many stunts players are enjoying to play a championship with RH, cuts, etc. and I'm the only one "newby" that disagree... it's clear to me too that I'm the wrong one :). So, don't worry , I'm not here trying to disturb or try to change the rules but only share with you my experience and first of all enjoy your super skills .

I've attached the 1.04.70, and you can see there's lots of room for improvement. I don't attempt the corkscrew PG-spin because it's too risky for only 5 attempts.

I'm not disagreeing to protest - it's just for the sake of the argument :-)

Let me add :" Happiness real only when shared (Cristopher McCandless) :)".

CTG video used the outiside replay camera and also the pc speaker so I could not check the initial accelleration . The best accelleration is difficult to achieve playing alone infact I think that I have to learn from you for all the cars :) . As told you in the previous posts , I have never run so much with the fast cars so looking at the CTG video about the Speedcar , I thought that also for the fast Indy was good to do not reach the rpm limit . I changed gear at 10000 rpm and, compare to your 12000, I found that I  lost almost an half second in the first part. Another thing that I have never noticed was the super speedup at the last jump inserting the fifth gear before to jump ...
Basically I lowered my lap time at 1.05.75 (attached). Almost 1.5 seconds better than the previous  1.07.30 but only 1.5 seconds doesnìt satisfied me considering that I have also jump on the edge in the last one. Why "only" 1.5 ... well surely there are a lot of things to do better but I have also noticed that I'm not confident with the 4° gear turns. I'm better using the 3°. Surely I'm worse than you  but I'm better than me with the 4°. I will try again but probably I'm too old or maybe I'm no good as you to run 3 of 5 races at 1.05 in this life ... :°( :))))))

Hello my great friends, sorry I was in Flu ... I raced yesterday evening and today on ct162 and found it very funny :) .

I finished only 2 races till now and this is the replay of the last one . No Replay Handling, no cut, no tires in the grass and all tricks made in the right way. I made some known mistakes, wrongly insert the first gear on the turn before the loop instead to leave the 2nd , etc.etc but . If there's a way to insert me in the competition, I saw that you added an Icon "A" for people using automatic gear. Can you add a "M" as Marco rules :). I'm joking :)

Sorry my friends, you know, I'm not confident and so I want to understand. At the beginning I thought that you have chosen this kind of race competition allowing replay handling, etc. because it was easier to control.    When I was trying to use this replay handling for this race , i have noticed that , if you want, you can use also already finished replays . If you stop a finished replay before the end(still in the race) and then try to race, the game will say that this race will not count for the score ... but if you continue anyway and then save again the replay before to finish  ...it will return valid for the score ...  I'm wrong ?

Indeed. In a RH race all forms of pausing, rewinding, saving, continuing, etc. are acceptable. You don't have to worry about the prompt, and the saving-before-the-finish trick is not necessary. For a brief historical account of how the status quo came into being, check this Wiki article (http://wiki.stunts.hu/index.php?title=RH_Hiding&action=history).

Joe, inside Grand Prix Circuit the name of the Don pipsqueak was Don Matrelli :)) Don Mattrick as Brad Gour (Bruno Gourdo) are the DSI designers of the game ,surely you know that they signed  Stunts too . In this link video that I share, I have showed a super Grand Prix Circuit Trick :))) ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNV1KuZn1nQ

Anyway, what I want to say is that , if you are 20 seconds slower than CTG , you can take his replay and finish it in another way so that you can maybe reach the 2nd or 3rd position after him but win on other pipsqueaks... So the "honest" problem, it's always present . Right ?

Many Thanks ALAN , I'm a Dos Gamer since 1982 :) I have played 4 colors games. Microprose claimed to be the first one to use the vga 256 colors in a flight sim  "F19" but this was not true because it's not a full 256 colors game . Dynamix A-10 tank killer was the really first one 256 in 1989.

My friend CTG, who checks all the replays to see if someone stole you, for example, the first turn ? The Alien Mindbenders :))) (sorry Zak, is a joke about your great name) ???  Another question about replay handling, after save you press the continue button and then you have to be fast in pressing game buttons otherwise you lose accelleration...right ? Is there no the pause button ?

Thanks my friends :))

If you steal a longer part at the beginning, the section times and lines will be suspiciously similar - even for less experienced pipsqueaks. However, I do not check replays at all - only the really fastest laps.

Your second question is an interesting one, but I don't think you can lose time with that, if you push the buttons properly.

Just esc. I don't think anyone uses the pause key. It's not difficult to start driving immediately after pressing "Continue", cause you can see on the screen exactly where you are.

I will stay with you absolutely :) It's not easy to find so great players ... The only thing that I don't know is how much I can stay in this campionship. It takes a lot of time and i have very few time ... Ok you can play how much you want but this is a competition and if you have 30 days to race ... the 55 pipsqueaks are too fast but I'm in a very close group next to 1.00 ...I don't know, maybe it's your expert strategy and the last day you will upload all 50 seconds and I will be the last ... :))

Anyway The lap result is surely defined by your ability but also by how much you play .
I'm near to 40 years old and I have still a lot of dos games to play  ... My reflexes are surely no more like 20 years ago .:)) I would like a campioship in which you can race only 1 hour every week or every 2 weeks ... fast result, obviously no cut, no replay handling, no trick :)))

I know , you are ready to ban me :))) I'm 40 years old so I have also brain problems and repeat always the same things. Hey, I'm not the oldest one because there's also an 81 years old from Argentina ... WOW !!!

Post by: Marco on February 09, 2015, 09:08:13 PM
For example, Schumy at 32 was champion of the world ... at 40 was 10th. :)

Joking aside, I don't want to say that if I was 20 , I could win the race  ... maybe I could make a 0.59 instead of 1.00 but it's clear to me that here there are pipsqueaks that I could not win also with my rules . You have also an unbelievable racing experience, more than 10 years this site !!!
Anyway I know that you are all ready to place the final bet on this race and send me out from the top five :)

The oldest name here is an EGA 16 colors Zak Mc Kracken, 1988 by Lucasfilm using the SCUMM system (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion). I have this game . In 1988 I was a 13 years old champion with Test Drive 1 and Grand Prix Circuit by accolade ... but many years earlier I was already a Pc pipsqueak with Pole Position in 1983 and Pit Stop 2 in 1984. Who knows these racing games ?

Marco, some history: There were several attempts on no-cut Stunts championships. We call it OWOOT (one wheel on/over the track). The name implies the main rule: at least one of the car's wheels must stay on or over the road. There are two variations:

Such competitions were popular around 2002-2004 and I enjoyed them a lot myself as well. The problem: the manager must carefully check EACH AND EVERY submitted replay from start to finish by hand to verify whether the pipsqueak was complying with the rules. This takes an incredible amount of time.

NORH competitions were also attempted, but only on a per event basis, as you can simply not exclude the possibility of anyone cheating and using RH. There are two main ways used to reduce risk:

As there is no way to prevent cheating in either of the above aspects, and managers have limited time, competitions allow RH and cuts as a generic rule to establish a fair race.

That said:
now that we have two weeks of public replays every month at ZakStunts, it would be completely OK with me, to add a checkbox at the replay upload form so pipsqueaks can indicate whether they have raced with RH and/or no OWOOT. If the checkbox was set, a small icon appears on the scoreboard next to the entry indicating the OWOOT / noRH time. We can also code a rule for OWOOT and noRH replays to be publicized always, any time during a race.

So at least you can compare yourself against others, and we have the power of publicity to verify whether OWOOT rules were properly used. Sure, no way to prevent RH, so noRH replays would be still on a voluntary basis. But if we can live with the occasional cheaters and accusations without a reason, this is an easy to add feature that may bring more fun to all of us.
What do you all think?

Thanks My friends . Zak, your point is very clear and as I told you in some previous posts ... if you are here since early 21 century, something is not simply working fine but ...perfectly !!!
I really appreciate that you take care of me as a newby that maybe will survive  few races but that I'm so superb to talk about rules before to play :))). Infact I have already changed my opinion on some points.
For example, at the beginning, before the first race, I thought that you were using these rules because they were easyer.
After see your first replays I changed my opinion :))). Today I no more  think that with my "real life rules" I would be in a better position ...  to be honest I think that replay handling helped me.

Anyway, because I don't know this world, when you have talked about a new championship USC , It was normally for me to ask about the rules. Also if I am a newby here, I know that ... same rules, same pipsqueaks... same results...only different tracks :)))

I'm too old and too busy to race 2 similar championship while, with only one and less effort, I can have the same super friends.:)

About the  "one tire on road replay check" you are right but I think that everyone would verify the replay of the player in front of him . Today Who is checking every replay to see if you are using an half replay by Duplode, CTG, etc.etc. (I'm not refering obviously to the fastest one, it's enough the 6th or the 7th replay because they are already in the first positions:)) .

When you are very young, you try everything legal or not legal to win ... The problem is not how but it's win .
After 20 years old the problem begins to become how :)) after 30, how to return to 20 ...and after 40, always how to return to 20 ...

One more historical note: Modern USC differs from ZSC mainly in that all replays are public and there is a single fixed car per race. Multi-car races are a innovation introduced by ZakStunts in 2008. Public replays, on the other hand, became a thing with the latest relaunch of USC, and made their way into ZakStunts this year. (BTW, historical question: were there any earlier competitions with mandatory public replays?)

Btw the stereotypic "big Italian heart with overflowing emotions" is way too transparent. I can just laugh at the creator of this pack of "pipsqueak(s)".
