i dont like wipe out because its graphics are superb and the concept is DUMB.

trackmania seems a new wipe out: if only some concept like those of stunts fullfilled those one season games... then they would last more than ten seasons... like stunts.

But stunts is more than ten seasons... its eternal.

Wow! I downloaded Trackmania Nations and I can only say - for me, this is the best racing game of the 21st century!! (Remember, Stunts is 20th century:) The game was designed specially for this year's Electronic Sports World Cup, which will take place in Paris in June/July! The game has it all - inspired by Stunts, there are track editor, save replay, inspired by the simplicity of driving like Micromachines, speed of NFS, handling is the best one I have ever seen, you fall in love with the throttle, jumping, stunt elements, the Stadium athmosphere...You can also play against yourself (a transparent car appears on track and shows your best lap time and driving line), there are chechpoint which make it even more dynamic! But you can also play it multiplayer online! Make your own tracks, watch replays, enjoy... I just canceled my exam but I feel great! Try it!

Hey man, TMN is just a small part of what TM is. Feel the real TM power : try TMO or TMSX. I prefer TMO : more difficult to handle first, but much more fun and pleasure after. TMSX is more focused on speed (well, except Coast part), TMO is more focused on crazyness and fun.
TMN is just a big advertisement of TM games. But it may become a part of forthcoming TMP = TM Planet, with many new blocks and all the missing features (platform, survival or stunts modes, yes : a stunts mode is present in TMO and TMSX).
If you like TMN, you'll love TMSX and you will never forget TMO.

But they all do not made me forget good old Stunts.

Wow, you are a real expert Krys! So many versions of TM, choices, adventures... what shell I do...the best I go study ;)

Zak: I postponed my exam date for next week! But I'm also in hurry..I have to graduate till september, and some exams still wait for me...damn they! :)

P.S. There is only ONE and only Stunts in my heart on this Planet, like U2 already sung
"...one life, one love, one stunts...."  :D

2 questions I'd like to ask: Are there any versions of Trackmania where you can play at the same time against each other (split screen) on one computer? And are the cars physical or can you drive through your opponent cars (that's cool:) Thanks in advance!
Title: TrackMania
Post by: Krys TOFF on May 29, 2006, 12:10:52 PM
Sorry Mislav : no split screen option in any TM game.
2 players on same computer is possible but on "hot seat" mode.

No contact with opponents in TM. You race against time and others, but you can't push others off the road. This is a racing game, not Destruction Derby/Deat Rally/Carmaggedon-like as CrashDay is with weapons active. :-D

That's official : new TrackMania game will be called TrackMania United (TMU), and not TM Planet as expected before.
Will "stadium" part of TM Nations be part of it or will TMN remain a stand-alone, I don't know so far.
Anyway, if TMN is included in TMU, there will be much more tracks elements added, including tunnels.
I'll give you more infos when I'll have some.

kryss, im a little lost - which game is the newest and the best among all these stunts-like games ?
Title: TrackMania
Post by: Krys TOFF on June 22, 2006, 06:43:58 PM
It depends what you're looking for.

CrashDay means weapons, Alain could talk you more about this game. I expected a lot of this game but didn't like the demo. Cars can touch each others.

TrackMania games : no car touch on these games, it's like racing versus ghosts. It's different kind of play than CrashDay. No weapons also.

TrackMania Original means fun but difficulty of racing for beginners. And not so much people for live play in these days sadly... But new TMO league online championship will start again, bringing back some pipsqueaks for sure. TMO is 2 years old, but it already had 3 free updates (called "v1.1", "power up" and last one called "original"). Last update was available 6 months ago or so. If you buy TMO now, it will already be with all the updates.

TrackMania Sunrise means speed and fun. I think less fun than TMO, but it's only my own opinion. More people than TMO for live online play, but still much less than before the release of TMN. TMS is 1 year old and already had an update called "extreme".

TM Nations : this one took all the pipsqueaks for online play since it was released because it's free and new. But it has much less possibilities than the other 2 TM games : less amount of tracks elements, less game modes (stunts and plateform modes are missing for example), more simulation driving than TMS, and much more than TMO, much less freestyle possibilities than TMS or TMO, only 1 environnement (stadium) instead of 3. Don't expect any update for this free game. It may (or not) be a part of the forthcoming TMU (TM United) which is in developpement.

Other sequels are projects and unfinished or dead, see "stunts sequels" topic to know more about them.

Small official website of TMU : http://www.trackmaniaunited.com/indexuk.htm

What will be TMU finally ? A combination of TMO, TMS and TMN.
All of them in one game.
A compilation ? More than than :
- new solo ways to play and new online ways to play will be added
- improved graphic engine
- TMN will have twice more "blocks" (track elements) and will be played either on night or day (like other TM environnements)
- about light, it seems a "source of light" point will be possible to configure (where is the sun to resume) and it will affect shadows and luminosity of some parts of the track
- "existential". A sort of MMORG (Massive Multiplayer Online Racing Game) it seems. How will it work ? I don't know, but once I do, I'll tell you.
- probably other features not told so far by Nadeo, but they really want it to be a real new experience, not only a simple TM games compilation.

Will it be a new game sold separately or could it be downloaded for free (like all game extensions they did before) for people that already possess all the TM games ? I don't know it so far also, wait and see. :-D

Who cares ? this is for the fun. We can hae only stunts tracks and not racing tracks if you want. Goal then is to perform highest stunts points and reach final line in a limited time period. Maybe you'll kick us all in this. ;)

13 gold medals and counting... :) :) :)  Got it today, and yes, it's really cool. Specially how TM captures the Simple Gameplay/Tricky Gameplay duality so typical of Stunts. And I haven't even touched the editor yet! You'll later find me online under my usual nickname - my only fear is whether my slowish (96kbps) connection could cause troble...
Title: Re: TrackMania

Connection with dial-up modem is not a problem as long as you don't want to host a server. Maybe sometimes you'll have to wait a fow seconds more for track loading (that is, if race is 5 minutes per track, you may have only 4'45 or even 4'30 only to race if track is big because it will take a few seconds more to load for you than for others with high-speed connection), but that's all.
Title: Re: TrackMania

Good to know... :) I'm lucky that my conection is not a true dial-up, but a shared ASDL (regular dial-ups here in São Paulo are really, really crappy...).

Tracks, avatars and skins are exchanged when loading online games, that may suck some bandwidth. Like all other online real-time games connection latency is the most important factor.

But be carefull, this game is highly addictive. It'll affect your Stunts research. ;)

This is right, I forgot to mention it.
You should disable this with a dial-up modem for sure. Not because of avatars or car colors (they are small files), but because of custom cars.
to be sure there's no prolem like that, when we will plan a game together I'll use the free version of the game : I have no custom car installed in this one.

I'm playing TMNF. Most likely due to the nature of that version, there are a few "community" goals in the solo mode (invite someone via mail, get 1000 ladder points, etc.). This time, it seems I'm supposed to "send" a lap to another player using a "Challenge Other Players" button in the replay menu after I finish a lap...

Well, it turned out that I didn't need to actually send you my lap - only using the option to export the replay to a .gbx file was enough for unlocking B14. Nevertheless, thanks  :) And just for the sake of it, here is a fresh gold medal lap in case you wish to try and beat it. But be wary, D05 is a mean and cruel track...

I'll have to install TMNF before then. Tracks are different in TMUF. I'm not sure the game can display the replay without the track itself.

Maybe not Krys - it seems .gbx files contain the track proper within them alongside with the target time (reminds a certain other game, doesn't it? :)). Since TMUF has TMNF Stadium within it, you will probably be able to race it.

Why everybody here should play TrackMania DS ?
Because it's a bug pleasure, like Stunts. Collision bugs, loopcut, ... All the "essence" of Stunts madness that is not in PC versions of TrackMania are in the DS version.
You know what, I'm happy with my TM DS game, really happy ! Too bad only 3 environments (out of 7 for TM United/TM United Forever) are implemented and that wi-fi racing is not implemented. That's the only part that Mario Kart has and that has not be improved by TM DS. You can play with friend at TM DS, but only on "local" connection between 2 to 4 DS, but not worldwide wi-fi like like Mario Kart.
Apart from that, this game is by far the best racing game on the DS.

Something that Krys may find interesting: Trackmania Nations Forever runs virtually perfectly on Linux under Wine 1.1.9 with only a few simple tweaks. For anyone interested, the tweaks are explained here: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=14851&iTestingId=35105 (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=14851&iTestingId=35105) . Screenshot evidence is attached below...
This means I'll resume playing TMNF often... :) ;)

I already saw it, there's a news about it on official website since a few days now. ;)
I'm proud to say I was one of the very few that tested the very 1st beta demo of the very 1st TrackMania game. Many things changed in this game since then, but the "spirit" remained, which is the main thing.
Anyway, I currently wait for the children to all be asleep before installing their present. Merry Krys-mas ;D to all of you. ;)

That's the advantage of stunts, you easily rank under 200.000...

Can we somehow make those 200,000 people come over and join Zakstunts? "The graphics are worse, but honestly it's a better game with better gameplay. The nostalgic atmosphere is enchanting"

Thn I'll be happy with all those others, otherwise it would be unfair to them.

Those of us who own TM United (so that they can display custom skins to other players) should make up a paintjob advertising ZakStunts  :D

Btw - just few months ago it was discovered that the replay system of TM is based both on position of a car and keystrokes during the ride. Karl Jobst says it is unusual thing in racing games - only position of a car is usually stored in replays. And - because of analyzing inputs (frequency of tapping) they discovered pretty big cheating scandal. :) If you have time, you can watch:

The replay system is "exactly" the same principle as stunts.
There was a track designed contest based on replay data. The car inputs were the same but by using power ups or track elements totally different tracks were raced.

This is very interesting. So after watching the videos, I quickly made this little program. I can compile it for GNU/Linux and Windows, but I want to make some changes to it, make it better, so to quickly post it, I only compiled it for DOS so far, which is enough, as it's super simple. The program is called "FTAPS"

You call FTAPS with a replay file name and it reads through it and it calculates the number of fast actions in the replay. There are two types of it being counted. Any of the two will, in a different way, give you an idea of the likelihood of a replay having been either tampered with or recorded at low speed. Normal replays will sometimes yield zero, but more commonly result in some positive value, but not too big. Honestly, I don't think this will be super useful for Stunts as it is for TrackMania because Stunts has a precision of 20 frames per second, which isn't much and TrackMania probably has some 60 frames per second or similar... but... who knows?
