The button to download a single replay from the scoreboard has been there for a few days, I forgot to mention it! It's at the end of the row, just before the points column.

It only appears if the replay is public of course, or after the race is over.

I guess at least 5 pipsqueaks will be under 1 minute.

Four, you got really close this time :o

Whatever happens, this might be one of the strongest races of the last 10 years.

Looking for the back, it was quiet an exciting one! I was really curious to see what would hide in the quiet replays, and I wasn't expecting Alan!

we are really off-topic here, is it possible to move the posts from dreadnaut's (see above) down to a new topic?
"what car is the one driving on the DSI logo?"
in custom cars??

Topic split, then merged with the other. Please wait a moment next time, so we can move existing messages instead of duplicating them.

Permanent Competition / Re: Default

Oh, time to give another try to this! How will it go? (See format)

1. Wooo, haven't done this in a while, and I don't remember on which side of the road the first slalom block will be! I'll go in the middle. I break a bit too much before corners, but I reach powergear at the bridge and manage to break and land decently off it. I close with a brilliant 1:08.05, which is awesome seeing that my personal record is 1:06.00.

2. Nope. This time I stay on the right side to jump over the slalom, but I end up in the grass when I try to align on the left for the coming corner. General slow down, extra grumpiness, and I leave the road after the boulevard, losing a ton of time: 1:15.75.

3. Argh, DNF! Great start, perfect first corner, then I take the cork l/r at full speed instead of cutting it, and of course I fly out upside-down :|

4. Meh lap. I touch the grass in a couple of corners, and miss the powergear on the ramp. Maybe I'm too distracted for this tonight. I close at 1:13.40

5. I sit up straight, square my shoulder, and off I go for the last lap! A pretty decent first half, but no powergear, and a terrible landing after the bridge. I end up visiting Joe's shop, and reach the finish line at 1:16.70.

Well, not great, but I'm still satisfied about the first lap :)

I know, but I didn't have a use for it other than exploring it's boundaries. It's on a 12 year old laptop. I try to keep it clean...

Makes sense. I use it to run web server and database. Most of the work for ZakStunts happens in there for example.

Yes, it breaks if you step outside the beaten path :)  But you can uninstall and reinstall it in 3 minutes, and you are good to go again.

Sorry about the loop jump, I don't know if it was there in the original. To follow the "make a small change" tradition, I swapped the loop and the slalom tiles, thinking it would have no effect. Turns out it makes the loop-to-bridge jump a thing :o

So what some of you have with DOS or Linux, I have with Windows.

I'm a "use the tool that does the job best" person, and Windows is best at... windows. I know Linux inside-out at this point, and I know my way around MacOS if I need to (hello latest job), but comfort means Windows. Tricked out, cut-down, re-configured, but still Windows.

And what I used to do on head-less computer, then later in a Linux VM, now runs in the linux subsystem.

If you're happy for me to write two articles, you can put me down for ZCT238 as well.

I am more than happy, thank you!

Plenty of slots available if anyone wants to write a short race summary!

You could check the guest track list, and review the race on your best/worst friend's track ;D

Quote from: Cas on January 10, 2021, 12:27:58 AMBut even though it's not in the menu, that is already available!  Just edit the configuration file. Where it says "format=bliss" or whatever, change it to "format=none" or "format=trackblaster". Let me know if that works for you.

Ah, I knew that, then I forgot! Thanks for updating things :)

It could be useful to have options listed in the configuration, for example (probably with incorrect descriptions):

; Default format for new tracks
; Possible values:
; - bliss: binary metadata at the end of the track data
; - text: text metadata in a separate .smd file
; - none: no metadata
; Default:
;  format = bliss
format=bliss

Chat - Misc / Re: Write in C (song) - I laughed a lot!
January 10, 2021, 11:30:06 AM
Oh, that song brings me back ;D  It might be as old as Stunts at this point, so back then C was great for graphics, at least compared to the alternatives.

QuoteI was looking up about languages that are not OOP (I hate OOP)
I wonder if you hate "OOP" (such a loaded term) or you hate the enterprise software pattern that certain languages—coughJava—enable, and the some industries love.

Most languages support objects today, but they also support functional constructs and streaming. That means you can pick any big hybrid language (say Python, PHP, Ruby, JavaScript, gah, even Java) and write in the paradigm you prefer. Or you can "pick and mix", but you need to look at each paradigm and understand what it is good for, and what's better done in a different way.

As a recent entry, you might enjoy Rust, which is fairly low-level and is trying to be a better C (more safety via compiler checks, and less pointer madness, as far as I understand)

That said, you can write good and bad software in any language. If I can pass along the smallest principle that makes the larger difference, I would say:

write code that looks like this:

a = calculateSomethingWith(7)
b = calculateSomethingElseWith(a)
output(b)

calculateSomethingWith(x) {
  return x*2
}

calculateSomethingElseWith(y) {
  return y - 3
}

instead of code that looks like this

n = 7
doSomething()

doSomething {
  a = n*2
  outputSomethingElse(a)
}

outputSomethingElse(z) {
  b = z-3
  output(b)
}

Go wide, not deep. Avoid global state. Get back a result as soon as possible and then work from there.
