Title: Peculiar track
Post by: mrdries on March 09, 2024, 04:14:13 PM
Hey,

Just a track to show two ideas:

-Different kind of corners by using chicanes
-Shortcuts within the track, also with the help of chicanes, they may or may not be faster.

I raced it and tried way too many times. Can you do it faster?

Here's another example. Cleaner this time.

It functions like a 4x5 composite track element.
The idea is to zigzag between the water.
Since the chicane functions like a full asphalt tile,
there is no way to replicate this kind of zigzag by following the road.
No penalty time was charged, though it may be better to put a solid bridge tile on the water so you can't drive half over the water and half over land. That could give you penalty time too.

Doesn't mean much. Just a fun effect. If there would ever be an asphalt terrain tile, the possibilities would be far exceeded.

I like the meaning of this last. It's like a karting track.

Thanks!
That's a good idea.
I'm guessing that perhaps a Stunts Kart Race may never have been held.
That would broaden the horizon.
You guys are the thing that keeps Stunts from dying out, not entirely, of course, but still.

As long as the track is predictable, it's quite fun to race.
The feeling is different, cause you don't have to follow a narrow road, you have to choose your own curve.

Very nice! I really like combinations of this kind. Here is one take at the first track. Still gotta figure out how to reliably use the first boulevard jump!

(By the way, while it's in a different style, ZCT272, the now-running ZakStunts track (https://zak.stunts.hu/tracks/ZCT272) has a bit of corner geometry play. You might enjoy giving it a go  ;))

That's amazing...
Beating me by 9 seconds.
That shocked me a little.

ZCT272 is a real beauty.

You guys really are keeping it alive though.

Btw... this is fun..

With a suitable car, those can be good for drifting challenges! For instance: W.TRK, KITT Firebird (https://forum.stunts.hu/index.php?topic=3636.0), manual gears, going through all tunnels.

Nice drifting.
Beautiful car too.
Can you gain time by drifting?
You had beaten my Jaguar time by one second.

In most cases not, but it's very situational. On a flat track clean cornering is usually best, but occasionally, with more slide-prone cars or after a tight landing, taming a slide with counter-steering and such can be more effective than slowing down to take a turn. (Also note that manual gears KITT is a very powerful car; the main challenge is keeping it on the track while in "pursuit mode"!)

We've had one or two...

I might be missing one or two more (did we ever live race the kart? I don't remember, but it seems like the kind of car we would have used for that...), but the 250cc superkart piloted by Crashper the stunting ghost has seen some action. Fancy trying it on one of your tracks? That first link also has the download.

Tried out the Superkart.
I think it would do really well on a track with lots of tight corners.
Yeah, enjoyed it.  :)

That is a cool combo for a CCC track. Because it uses tunnels as checkpoint.
Really cool that you share these findings. They seem trivial, but I hadn't thought of them yet   8)

If I wasn't able to share these tracks, I'd never have bothered trying. And never have found them.
Almost missed this one.

This is a good idea, but in this particular layout, the easternmost side of both "chicane lanes" is a continous straight path of chicane/fast grass.

There's a way to save it. I received no penalty time.

Just for fun...

A combination of Karting and Stunts.
Drove it with the SuperKart.
That Kart is so agile, that it is lots of fun.
I could have put an inclined road in there too.

There are so many more ways to use these chicanes.
I had made this one yesterday, though here you may cheat a little by missing a tunnel.
But if you can use tunnels as checkpoints, it may work too.

Glad you enjoyed this stuff.

We should use more tracks or add section tracks like these in the competitions. Looks like fresh ideas and fun. Ok no stunts or jumps that's why I thought about sections and maybe not a entire competition track like this. But it looks very interesting to try.
Title: Re: Peculiar track
Post by: mrdries on March 12, 2024, 12:06:28 PM
Am I allowed to make a page about composite or simulated track elements on the Stunts Wiki?

Then people can add new elements later.

It seems that I don't get penalty time as long as I didnt' skip more than 2 track elements.

Yesterday, I thought an 180 degree turn on full asphalt would be impossible. But it is. This is a possible set up. That's just an example of how it could be done.
It is faster than going for the penalty time.
R.bmp

This is another kind of chicane

T.bmp

This is simply another kind of chicane, while driving diagonally.

And here is the track file from the previous post.

I'm not sure it is really needed though.
I've already given so many examples here.

This is the curve around the pond. But that one already appeared in one of the tracks.

The asphalt surface seems to present everywhere even though the tiles overlap.
Title: Re: Peculiar track
Post by: Overdrijf on March 12, 2024, 02:05:17 PM
Now that one is cool. We call that an  illusion element, a multi-tile element will work as long as the top left tile is present, and you can overlap it with other multi-tile elements for cool interactions. In this case I would indeed expect that all of the chicane tiles are full asphalt.
Title: Re: Peculiar track
Post by: mrdries on March 12, 2024, 04:09:32 PM
I see. I was lucky to have kept the upper left corner free.

Well, I've been acting a little obsessed about these things.

So here is the 180 degree turn with something else than tunnels. To make it look a bit more interesting.

R.bmp

Here is the short 90 degree turn.

Y.bmp

And here's a track that insists that you go the wrong way through the finish line. Only to drive through it, a bit later, in the right direction.

Sure! Check your PMs  ;)

We have an article on illusion tracks (https://wiki.stunts.hu/wiki/Illusion_track), the more specific concept Overdrijf mentioned, but though related that's not same as your idea. A broader catalog of combinations could be pretty useful indeed!

@mrdries Loving these odd combinations, they gave me a few ideas for future tracks ;D  And reminded me of your awesome trial tracks (https://forum.stunts.hu/index.php?topic=4131.0), which I'll go and try again!

Could you upload the screenshots as PNGs in the future? BMP files are huge!

Learned a bit about overlapping tiles.
People have been really inventive about this.
Can't always get it to work.
But this one worked out.

Thanks to everyone for the support.

I love this one. Quite narrow at times. And all the chicanes dropped in so smoothly, like pieces of a puzzle.
I stumbled on this one by accident. The total width is 5. There are 5x5 corners hidden inside. One to the left, then one to the right.
So these 5x5 corners must be pretty high speed tolerant!

I agree. A track should have variety, but it's ideas like this that you can use for each part to make them diverse

Yes, these new perspectives is a great contribution. It's a way of building tracks that we never saw.
