let me start the topic with the ultimate wedding tracklist:

entry of the pair: Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over The Rainbow

vows, ring exchange (background music): Depeche Mode - Slowblow

congratulations: 3 songs in the following order:
Belle & Sebastian - Piazza New York Catcher
Depeche Mode - World In My Eyes
David Bowie - Absolute Beginners

Piazza New York Catcher! I didn't know you were into that one. Breathtaking song indeed... And World In My Eyes is so cool to have playing.

Indeed. :) I tried to convince Andi to use Oberkorn instead of Slowblow but she didn't like it.
And the last Bowie song is there for the lyrics. Perfect for a wedding:

Quote
I've nothing much to offer
There's nothing much to take
I'm an absolute beginner
And I'm absolutely sane
As long as we're together
The rest can go to hell
I absolutely love you
But we're absolute beginners
With eyes completely open
But nervous all the same

If our love song
Could fly over mountains
Could laugh at the ocean
Just like the films
There's no reason
To feel all the hard times
To lay down the hard lines
It's absolutely true

Nothing much could happen
Nothing we can't shake
Oh we're absolute beginners
With nothing much at stake
As long as you're still smiling
There's nothing more I need
I absolutely love you
But we're absolute beginners
But if my love is your love
We're certain to succeed

I just messed up a bit the HUF-GBP cash exchange, but hopefully that'll stay my biggest problem :)

Those are wonderful lyrics... I see what you mean.

I also see your point about Oberkorn. Oberkorn is the "adventure" song, as if you were being wed by a wizard in a magic forest. Slowblow is very different, like you're being wed among the coolest people in Paris in the secret basement of Le Moulin Rouge at 3 in the night.

I just can't stop myself from spreading/spamming the awesomeness of King Crimson. I'm not sure if there are many fans of progressive around here (the only outspoken one is currently "on holidays") but I feel this music has appeal far beyond genre boundaries... I mean, it seems rather unlikely these clips (or at least either one of them, depending on personal tastes) will fail to bring a smile to music lovers...

Listening to "Vision Thing" album by Sisters of Mercy... the vitriolic mood fits me perfectly tonight. Too bad it's too late in the night for screaming the lyrics at full volume...

Quote from: More
There are parts of me that don't get nervous
Not the parts that shake
You won't get what you deserve
You are what you take
Learning to cry for fun and profit
I'm not done yet
Counterfeit dollars or the English zloty
Anything I can get

Quote from: I Was Wrong
In a bar that's always closing
In a world where people shout
I don't wanna talk this over
I don't wanna talk it out
I was quite impressed until I hit the floor
Isn't that what friends are for?
Pain looks great on other people
That's what they're for

Yes, those are good lyrics, but in the end I think both of SOM's other albums, and The Reptile House EP are better and more interesting.
But there's something about Vision Thing when you are in a sarcastic mood and you can see the blunt irony of the world. Then Vision Thing kind of sweeps past all hope and fear and just plainly asserts what you can do with this ironic reality. Like having 25 whores in the room next door.

Sums it up well  :) I recall having loved about half of Floodland, the other half left me a bit cold - but I need to listen to it more anyway.

Now, the proposition is: can we please both the metal and the post-punk musical sensibilities here with the same piece of music? Having a bit of both within myself, I found the following approach to prog metal to be quite interesting, even refreshing:

Maybe you guys already came across it, but I have just noticed that the Internet Archive hosts a massive collection of free, authorized "bootlegs" at http://www.archive.org/details/etree (http://www.archive.org/details/etree) . The majority are from independent artists of all sorts, but some hip modern indie bands (Animal Collective, quite a number of post-rock acts and the sort of stuff often hyped at last.fm) are covered as well, and there are a few big surprises:

Definitely worth a check, I say.

ever heard about Microsoft Songsmith? It's basically a tool to remove uniqueness from music. (actually what it does is to autoamtically write music for the voice of a singer) From one side this is frightening. On the other hand it can be quite funny sometimes, especially if you like covers. :)

Some nice examples:
Motörhead goes easy listening:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg0l7f25bhU#noexternalembed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg0l7f25bhU#noexternalembed)

Metallica goes synthpop:

Like to many of my favourite artists, I was introduced to Sparks by Bonzai Joe. I remember he told me "There is nothing like the Sparks". Indeed, this is true. I liked them instantly, it took me a year to fully discover and truly fall in love their early years (70s) constantly playing their songs on my mp3 player, and only recently I felt myself ready to explore their later works. And I must admit, I find most of their work an act of genius.
And now I listened to the album Lil' Beethoven from 2002. Amazing fusion of genres in a minimalistic yet versatile presentation, an instant place on my top10 album list.

My two favorites from this album as of now:

I heartily recommend it. There are so many ways to find new artists to listen to - recommendations, artist pages and charts, the "social" features, not to mention the subscriber-only streaming radios - that you are bound to find some good stuff.
