Post by: zaqrack on April 06, 2004, 01:04:28 AM
As you maybe noticed from the lots of downtime, I was working hard with a friend of mine to install the new server and especially the software on it.
In the past 3 days we managed to achieve a  stable level, so I could migrate to site to the new server.
Some technical and update info for you:

Hardware+SW
Gigabyte GA586DX dual Pentium mainboard ATX form
2 times Intel Pentium 166Mhz processors
2x64+2x8MB Kingston EDO ram
1.6GB + 1GB hard disks (about 1.5GB for the site)
unfortunately bandwith stayed: 12k/sec :( maybe it'll be 18k/sec soon but I cant get more than that. :(
-server supplied by eBalazs :)
SW: UHU-Linux (based on Debian) Server edition 1.0RC3 with SMP multiprocessor kernel
--installation and configuration support by mrmaim :)
Errors corrected, new things:

-finally you dont need a / at the end of URL's to make them work
-mail system is fully configured, no tons of error messages
-server load is about 1/3 of the one before -->still slow copnnection but very stable
-eggdrop installed, please welcome our new bot: Skid. I'll kick out Helen after one week testing of Skid (he logs and he sits there, and doesnt whine at all, so its fine :)
-mailman mailing list server configured (only 1 bug left :() this means when I find that bug I can host a mailing list for every team, and so there'll be an option that if you send your replay, it'll be posted to your team mailinglist too.
-you can ask for ssh/ftp access for the server, I can grant about 50MB of webspace for every of you. soon you can get a stunts.mine.nu mail address too :)

about thats it. I think this new server will supply a stable base for iproving the site in the following months, years :)
you might experience more downtimes as usual, because I'm not sure some configs are written well. If you experience any problems please tell me.

Zak

Title: server speed
Post by: zaqrack on July 03, 2004, 12:23:30 AM
Well my internet provider allows me from yesterday to upgrade connection speed with no additional price to be paid for the upgrade, just the new monthly price, and of course a long-term (3 years) contract.

Since I'm really satisfied with them (1 day downtime in 2 years...) the contract is no problem, and the monthly price is only 3EUR more than the current one, I'll try to convince my mother to upgrade our connection.

this means:

download: 384kbps -> 512 kbps (wont affect you :))
upload: 64kbps -> 128 kpbs

this means if I succeed the server's speed will be almost doubled (it's a bit higher now than 64kbps, but it means it can also be a bit higher than 128 :))
Wish me luck to convince my mother :D

no, no, the problem is that lately my and my brothers computer is continously downloading from emule, and altough I have restrcited the upload bandwidth for the programs its still 8-8k/sec, so it takes 16k/sec.
sorry, soon the musics I want will be downloaded ;)

As long as the site is hosted at your home computer, this site speed problem will stay...
But web hosts would mean a cost for Zak, or some ads, no ?

Isn't there a web space allowed by your web provider for homepage for free (I mean, no more than your current web access cost) ? For example, my provider is free.fr, and they give me 100 Mo of drive space.

 Maybe abandonware games download could be on your home PC (because of the file sizes), but ZakStunts, Stunts portal and forum on a web host ?This way, site wouldn't be down if your computer is down and speed would remain unchanged.

Don't worry, you heard him say the speed will go up again in a few days. I like it very much better like this than with a lot of ads. And in the past when this site has been webhosted, I think the downtime has been even higher.

the problem is with free hosts that if they allow PHP, the very rarely give MySQL access for the site what is essential.

Another solution is a friend's server: http://digitaldynamite.demoscene.hu
I have a subdir here. check the speed please from other countries, I dont think its enough...

Thanx for complaining situation, Zak   Would be nice if you'd post a message in news about ur busy connection   btw, I think you should move stunts.mine.nu index page (portal) to another free server. Then at least potential surfers will visit other Stunts related sites.

P.S. Your friend's site even slower than yours

People outside Hungary: speed test please.
I created this account some months before, I have php,sql,everything I need + a stupid ad-banner :-S
if the connection speed is OK we can move here, or even better - have a mirror.

I know the databases are not working yet, just test the site speed and report here. Thanks.

The speed is fast for me! It would be better if you don't change the main address (because every 1 year - six months the address changes cjb, bsd, mine, etc) so a mirror would be ok! BTW I don't know if it will be a lot of work for you.
Title: stunts.mine.nu
Post by: zaqrack on September 01, 2004, 10:54:48 PM
not so much work at all, if it's not about mirroring, rather moving. I can redirect stunts.mine.nu anytime - I can use an other address for my home server.
stunts portal, zakstunts, forum would move, everything else stays at home.

the two bad things are:
-banner (it can be removed for 25EUR/year, what I dont really want to pay)
-bit harder to update because server its not local - I update monthly, so who cares.
-no bigger files than 1MB allowed. since the games are stored anyway on an other server it doesnt matter. I can reduce stunts and the track pack a bit, those are the only files accepted.

awaitng more speed reports...

That site is quite fast for me. And that's all I have to say. Because if I started to say anything else, it would just sound stupid    :P

http://zaqrack.fw.hu for me is not loading faster than http://stunts.mine.nu/zakstunts and I hate  :x    :!: the banners and pop ups that much, that I'll also go to your original site even if it took twice as long to load. Isn't it "simply" possible to keep your site the way it is, also with you updating at home and then mirroring it to the zaqrack.fw.hu address for those, who can and want to read from this site?

Aah, I can see one problem: replay submitting and posting news, can this be done on a mirror site...?  :?
Title: stunts.mine.nu
Post by: zaqrack on September 02, 2004, 08:52:22 AM
i can sync the mysql database from crontab, but I have never actually tried this thing, it might be very complicated.

new thing:

I just consulted a bit with my web-provider and I'll get 15MB of free webspace on their server, which MUST be fast.
Of course no mySQL server. Still no problem, if they allow PHP, I can use my home server as an SQL server accessible from outside.
If they dont allow php this wont work at all
we'll see.
Title: stunts.mine.nu
Post by: Mingva on September 02, 2004, 04:25:28 PM
I'd suggest only to move portal page to free and no-banners site. Plus maybe with additional button to show on-line status (e.g., sorry, site is curently not working :D ).

What abt .hu site - speed is ok but I rather will wait 10 secs more than view/close ads
Title: stunts.mine.nu
Post by: JTK on September 02, 2004, 05:18:51 PM
Zak, how much web space do you need all in all?
Title: stunts.mine.nu
Post by: zaqrack on September 02, 2004, 08:03:58 PM
web space:

zakstunts: 30MB
forum engine: 15MB
portal: 1MB

this wont get too much bigger (tracks, pics dont take up much space :)), so I'd say 50MB is enough.

the SQL database is now:

zakstunts: 2MB
forum: 10MB

this is growing rapidly, so I need at least 20MB

Oh, that is very much... I consider asking my provider (who actually is a friend of mine) if he could give me some more space. You could have a part of that then, maybe it is faster (I think I could even get a 2nd level domain like stunts.kalpen.de). Shall I ask him?

Post by: Krys TOFF on September 06, 2004, 10:57:13 AM
For me, speed of new adress is as fast (or as slow) of current one (your downloads are finished ?).
Opening is slower than mine.nu because of popup (same problem as Mingva).
So, overall, it seems slower than current site, with useless ads.
I have nothing special against current site, it can stay the same as long as Zak download not too much files at the same time.

Zak, I finally met my friend but the price is far too high, he said that he wanted double price from what I pay now (~ ? 13,00 a month), that is too much for me (or in other words: I don't want to sponsor  ~ ? 150,00 a year for that).  :(  Sorry  :(

server news:

my brother accidentally pulled out the power cord which resulted in a burn-down mainboard :( Don't ask how. It's quite sad as it was a rarity.

Fortunately I had a spare at home, so the server is now running on a Celeron 400Mhz, with a little less RAM (96MB) - 64 taken from my brother's computer = revenge ;)

So thats why we had a little downtime today. Sorry, and I hope there wont be many problems with the new mainboard.

a bit of bad news:

the server will be down on friday from 18:00 GMT+1 for a 1 to 12 hour duration.

and the good news:

our DSL will be upgraded, apart from the many many good things I'll experience you'll experience this:

from your point fo view:
Server upload speed 256kbyte/s -> 512kbyte/s
Server download speed 24kbyte/s -> 64kbyte/s
That means Zakstunts will be around 3 times faster. yipppeeeee :)

Attention Competition Managers! Please send your competition's info and data for the portal, so I can update it for 2008.

And some great news about the server:
Finally there is a provider in our area, who can provide a synchronous 4/4 or 6/6Mbit web connection. As soon as the also offer IP based phone service, I'll change my current provider (due in some months), and probably order a 4/4 package. Conclusion: Server speed will boost from 64Kbyte/s to 512Kbyte/s, providing quick and easy access for you.
I also intend to upgrade to a fixed IP, as all the mine.nu addresses are banned in China.

Plan B: I'll move everything to some hosted webspace. But as this requires lots of work, this will only happen, if the first plan doesn't work or is too expensive.
