Title: stunts.hu
Post by: zaqrack on January 31, 2008, 06:54:31 PM
Well, the server change was as flawless and easy as I have never dreamed it!

forum, wiki, zakstunts, portal all moved.
subdomains still not set, but they will be soon.
I'm also redirecting stunts.mine.nu from my home server to stunts.hu

enjoy :) and please report on the change of the server speed!

first bug: the forum lost all the special accents. This cannot be fixed sorry :( Fortunately mostly only Hungarian topics are involved.

it does redirect. stunts.mine.nu/forum redirects to stunts.hu/forum. If you used a different entry point than this, of course it does not redirect.

attachments got transferred and work. Only your last 5 attachemnts dont, as you uploaded them after I transferred the folders. Sorry.

And it was worthy. Now if anything crashes we have daily backups and better reliability anyways. I would have died along with all the data if my HDD would have crashed at home. Not to mention the faster server speed.

I don't think it's worthy. Posts with special accents in SIX years lost, all, and I don't think the other things compensate this. But you know. I always used http://stunts.mine.nu/forum/index.php link, saved in the favorites.

1. Posts are not lost, only the special characters inside are subsituted with question marks. I'm also quite upset, but can live with it.
2. Imagine losing all content (and I have only partial backups on my home server, no RAID or such security) three years later. Then ALL posts of the last TEN years would be lost. I don't want to risk such a thing to happen, and this is worth some money and question marks in my opinion.

3. - if you removed index.php from the end of the link, you get redirected.

Good : emoticones are back.
Bad : it seems it's not only accents (almost not used except in Hungarian and Spanish parts of the forum) that are problematic, but also some " ' " characters. In some song lyrics I published, the " ' " are replaced too by " ? ". Weird.
Example : http://stunts.hu/forum/index.php?topic=2067.0 (Metallica song "Sad but true")

Subdomains working!

http://forum.stunts.hu
http://wiki.stunts.hu (not working because of a bug, will be fixed)
http://zak.stunts.hu
http://unskilled.stunts.hu
http://career.stutns.hu (no content yet)

I guess this is the most convenient way to reach the sites!

As maybe you have thought to do, due to SDR will go on with periodic events, the description on its banner link could be more generic.
About the specific topics, while "Lenght" could be always "one month", instead of "Track Interval" there could be something as "Next event" or "Last Event" with the planned date, updating it after SDR's announces, if sure this won't be heavy to manage for you during the year.
Due also to the possibility to introduce special events in NORH modality, even the correspondent topic "Replay Handling" should be modified in a proper way...
Thanks for all your job about The Portal!  :)

Thankfully Mark reminded me with his post of asking for an update on the JACStunts banner. Zak, could you please:
1. Modify the "track interval" to bi-weekly, and
2. Update the link to the new forum/portal at http://jacstunts.gooforum.com
Thanks in advance!

Good, the old JACStunts page can now rest in peace... :) Just one lil' thing: fields "Length" and "Track Interval" on JACStunts are kind of swapped, it should read 4 months and 2 weeks respectively. Also, the RH field of USC is telling the old "Number of Competitors" data instead.

Thanks Zak, just 2 things:

1) the name is remained "Stunts Olympic Games", but it should be "Stunts Drivers Races";
2) the script "Track Interval" can be eliminated replaced only from "Next Event".

Thanks again!  :)

I have an idea in my head, creating a new style of website with a new design and options.

The website could have these options:
Stunts
- description
- community
- community sites
- History
- Wiki (link)
Cars
- List of cars with a 3D view with search filters
- List of circuits with a search engine with filters such as length, time, competitions ...
Drivers
- List and information
Competitions
- List and information
Downloading
Members - linked to the forum
Multimedia Resources
- Screenshots
- Videos
News
Forum (link)

Connection facebook, flicrk, Youtube, Chat Forum RSS

When i'll have the model i will hang.

The fonts look normal here as well (Firefox and Konqueror). As for the updates, they are quite cool. I would maybe consider showing only one post from the day, rather than a few of them, on each reload, as that means there are more possible choices, and also because in most cases it is funnier to read the messages out of their context  :D That is just personal taste anyway.

Ah, I see! I added more than one post to give context, because I had no idea what they meant otherwise. But if I'm ruining the comedic effect, I can go back to the old code :)

At the moment it shows no more than five (randomly chosen but in sequence) from a random previous year.

This is a call for suggestions for the portal page! Ideas about contents, graphics, colors. About what should be large and loud and what is secondary.

The portal gets stable 5-10 hits per week. I would not bother much. Perhaps we could:

- put a stunts (+cars) download link.
- stunts videos from youtube (draws attention)
- link the stunts wiki with more emphasis
- short explanation on why taking part in competitions is cool :)
- dancing cats and animated gifs

Main stunts.hu portal not working?  I'm getting a blank page.

Following the old discussion above, I believe that, even when we normally don't check it much, it's important for it to have something there and to check from time to time to make sure it's active because new people that come across the community likely fall there first. It could have information on what online tournaments are about in general, have a link to the forum, the wiki and the currently running tournamens (as I remember it does). Videos would be great too.

This time, I was trying to get to it because I remember Dreadnaut had told me that I could set up a json file in R4K so that the portal would auto-detect the current track and I wanted to get an idea of the file name and its structure.
