Title: Airplanes
Post by: CTG on November 02, 2011, 09:46:18 PM
Maybe I'm megalomaniac but I'm fond of giant airplanes.

I saw this one in the late afternoon...

I am ambivalent in this question. I always admired the huge airplanes flying over the city, but I'm afraid of flying (never tried, probably never will). On the other hand it's more spectacular to see the airplanes taking off than sitting on the board.

Btw which type do you travel with between Europe and China? B747?
Title: Re: Airplanes
Post by: zaqrack on April 11, 2012, 10:32:42 AM
most of the time I flew with Airbus-A330 which I also like the most for long travels.
Earlier had to chance to fly with Boeing-747, Boeing-777, Boeing-767, Airbus A-340

Missed the A-380 by only one day in 2010 November :(
Of course it is also depending on the company and the seat configuration, but I found B-747 the least comfortable.
Unfortunately the only direct flight from Budapest to China (Hainan Airlines, Budapest-Beijing) was cancelled this March. :(

Spotters of Ferihegy were also pissed off because of the cancelled flight. And also because of Terminal 1 closure. And even more because of Malév's death. For non-Hungarian members: few weeks ago the bankrupt of the Hungarian national airlines was announced. The government did nothing to prevent it - rumours say some of the top dogs are really-really interested in low-cost airline companies.

I'm sorry to see only a few bigger airplanes here, like B-767 (UPS), B-747-8F (Cargolux) and rarely AN-124 Ruslan.

Great webpage for statistic-fan air passengers: http://flightdiary.net/

Data of my flights: http://flightdiary.net/Usrin

It's a pity that I barely remember which airplane types did I fly with... I was always more interested in trains. When flying, rather the landscape and the weather take my attention (so having a seat at the window is the most important).

Damn, yesterday I missed the lowest flying B747-8F of my amateur airplane fan era - only by a few seconds (I heard it, but couldn't see). Usually they fly 800-1200 m high over our flat, now it was only at 600-650, according to flightradar24.com.

I agree. But Beluga is for carrying oversize load, so the designers had very limited possibilities.

What about such an airplane: http://www.innovationnewsdaily.com/1568-supersonic-flying-wing-nasa.html ? Not a giant, but would be faster than these whales.

Although I still owe the results of the estimation game to you, I have to tell that Boeing 747-8 is the second longest airplane on Earth (behind AN-225 Mriya), while the huge whale A380 is not even a podiumer.

From the aspect of airplanes, yesterday was far the richest day of my life - 4 different types of 2x2 engine aircrafts: the small Avro RJ100 (Swissair) and the big birds: Boeing 747-400 (Cargolux), Antonov 124 (Volga-Dnepr Airlines) and my first Ilyushin IL-96 (Aeroflot) ever, see below. Moreover, an A310 cargo plane of Turkish Airlines also arrived as a surprise.

Tomcat is simply great. I just love the way it's wings change their position when flying at high speeds. My favourite American plane ('Top Gun' had a little to do with me liking it too). 3º in my list of favourite planes.
Fulcrum is amazing. The plane I love the most. Don't know exactly why, but I just love it!

And since you posted Tomcat's (3º) and Fulcrum's (1º) pics, I'll post the other one I love and that ranks 2º on my list. I guess you can guess which one it is from the pics

I remember a good old joke about airplanes (sorry for the bad translation):

A Jumbo is flying together with a Tomcat and a MiG-29. The pilots are bored, so they start to mock eachother: which airplane is better. The two fighters - competing with eachother - start to show unbelievable tricks in the air.

"Hey, you fat whale, can you do this?" - asks the MiG guy from the Jumbo's pilot.

"Oh, I have even better tricks! Just move farther a bit and watch." - comes the answer.

The fighters move away and watch the Jumbo, but nothing happens in the next 30 minutes.

"Hey, what are you doing? We couldn't see anything!" - roars the MiG pilot.

A self satisfied voice answers from the Jumbo:

"Let's see... I switched on the AP, ate a sandwich, went to toilet, took a crap and afterwards... well... do you know our blonde stewardess with huge boobs? I fucked her in the load area."

Considering the altitude dependence of sound barrier (~1050-1100 kmh at airliner's altitude) and the specifications of Airbus A330, I start to doubt the flightradar24 speed data published for the estimation game. However, the radar always shows some bigger airplanes (A330, A340, A380; B747, B777) beyond 1050 kmh. Experts will be asked about it.

A330: ~0.9 Mach as a specification, but I guess they are able to fly faster (0.96 for A380). But not breaking the sound barrier...

Flightradar24 probably shows ground speed, while the capabilities of an airplane limit the air speed. 150 km/h winds are not unusual at cruising altitude, so an air speed of 900 km/h in tailwind can easily mean ground speed of 1050 km/h.

That sounds rationally. But since I saw some smaller and weaker planes - B737, A320 - over 1100, or even 1200 kmh (!!!), I don't really believe that data.

The minimal speed is also funny. When a huge cargo plane is full, the first minute after the takeoff always seems to be a scary "standstill".
Title: Re: Airplanes
Post by: Usrin on January 22, 2013, 10:05:09 AM
It could be checked if you compare speed data with this map: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn0014.png

That's wind speed in knots (1 knot=1.85 km/h) in the level of 200 hPa pressure (11-12 km). Sometimes the speed of westerly winds reaches even of 300 km/h, and long-haul flights prefer to use these zones to reduce fuel usage & flight time.

Btw, if you see 1100-1200 km/h for an airplane flying westwards above Europe, the N Atlantic or N America, you can be sure that it's wrong data.

You mean 'reasonable'. I think Ground Speed vs. Air speed and Heading East vs. West is probably what's messing up the numbers. It is important to define this because it could break Zak & Usrin tie...

The Avro is a cute little plane, I once flew it to Zurich. Better than turbo-propeller planes which are roughly the same size.

Three things to mention:

- Even if it's small, it has 4 engines.
- The sound of Avro is quite unique, it reminds me a bit on a trolley bus.
- Avro is one of the very few airplanes in Open TTD's additional airplane pack being able to carry any kind of cargo stuff. Try to imagine it with livestock... ;D

El Al Airlines will come to Budapest with Boeing 747 once a week - just to kill Wizz Air's low cost flights between Budapest and Tel-Aviv. Even if I'm happy to see another Jumbo, I'm against that kind of business trickery.

One week ago, we saw an Antonov 124 (Antonov Airlines) landing in Stavanger. Quite shocking sight after the usual Boeing 737's and smaller airplanes. :) I got to know that it's not a regular route, it comes here only a few times per year.

AN-124 planes come about every second month to Budapest - usually in pair (with one day difference). Luckily they can use only T2's runway, so if there's a landing from the Budapest side of the airport (I always forget the 13/31 R/L codes), they fly over our house (at ~400-450 m altitude).

Btw I remember the first time I saw the Ruslan - it was 2 years ago in the summer. I was walking on the street when this giant appeared, very close to me (~100 m ahead, ~400 m above). Since it was quite a flat and extremely slow landing procedure, the "USSR" engines are terribly loud and I never saw such a huge monster before*, the whole scene was shocking.

* AN-124 is about 69 m long with 73 m winspan and quite massive fuselage, while my former record holder, Boeing 747-400 (~70 m length, ~64 m wingspan) seems to be a lot thinner - and of course it's not that loud.

Btw have you ever seen the Mriya? It visited Brasil about two years ago, but also appeared in Netherlands and Germany lately (when it visited Hungary in 2008, the weather was too foggy to see anything from that). Probably I won't ever catch it. :-\

Important question about flying: http://www.ttrweekly.com/site/2013/02/flying-farts-are-fine/

"On the one hand, if the pilot restrains a fart, all the drawbacks previously mentioned, including impaired concentration, may affect his abilities to control the plane," the researchers said.

"On the other hand, if he lets go of the fart, his co-pilot may be affected by its odour, which again reduces safety onboard the flight."

Have you ever seen this?

Yeah, the answer of USSR for Concorde: Tupolev TU-144 (even if it had an earlier, forced introduction). It was so typical in cold war: the Soviets built the (slightly) bigger*, stronger, faster... and the more unreliable one.

ParametersAérospatiale-BAC Concorde     Tupolev TU-144
First flight1969. 03. 02. 1968. 12. 31.
Number built20 16
Length61.7 m65.5 m
Wingspan25.6 m28.8 m
Height12.2 m10.5 m
Weight78.7 tons 85 tons
Powerplant performance         4 x 140 kN                  4 x 200 kN
Cruise speed2180 km/h 2285 km/h

* Those Russians had another megalomaniac plan in the 80s: the 8-engine monster, Antonov 325. However, USSR collapsed before it became real.

Stupid accident, really. As far as I know the plane's staff indicated some trouble of the load's instability on the runway or right after the takeoff. It can be very dangerous when such a high elevation angle is needed (security issue in the war zone). Probably the low speed and the broken weight balance led to the fatal stall.

According to Budapest airplane spotters, I missed the take-off of the year. Kalitta Air's B747-400 cargo left the city at an extremely low altitude (flightradar24 replay wasn't really informative in this question, but it's still visible that Jumbo flew only at ~900 m - over the 11th district* :D).

1. nice bike lane from our home all the way
2. seaside, nice place to lay down
3. Airport less than around 10km away to the south. Huge planes flying very low over your head.
4. Cargo ship port around 10km to the north. Huge ocean liner cargo ships continuously passing quite close.

The new "Hungarian" (=based on Arabian money) airlines, Sólyom Airways will start with damned old Boeing 737-500 & Avro RJ85 planes - and ugly paintjob... ::)

photoshop-job (but may be Paint after all...)

The picture is quite low quality, but the real design plans are more or less the same.

Yes, it did not change. Quite an ugly one, especially compared to Malév.

It seems their money was enough only for the paintjob - Sólyom Airways is close to bankrupt before the first official takeoff... ::)

Nice surprise in the morning: although the well-informed experts said that Volga-Dnepr's Antonov 124 - spending two days at Ferihegy Airport - will leave in the night, I saw its takeoff at 7:30. :)

Damn, yesterday I missed the lowest flying B747-8F of my amateur airplane fan era - only by a few seconds (I heard it, but couldn't see). Usually they fly 800-1200 m high over our flat, now it was only at 600-650, according to flightradar24.com.

Holy crap! El Al cargo (747-400, the loudest Jumbo) just exploded my ears with a flat takeoff. FR24 said ~670 m altitude when it flew over our home.

Did you enjoy the flight?

BUD ---> MUC was fine, but MUC ---> BUD seemed to be my worst flight ever: very steep take-off (causing strong headache), minor (?) turbulence problems, harsh landing.

Unfortunately the flights were fixed by the company.

Btw I saw some big fishes (A330, A340, Dreamliner), but had no time to take a photo, 'cause my boss kept me in discussion about the case (even while travelling back to Budapest).

Next time we will go by car... ::)

Yesterday I was flying with an unusual jet plane, Embraer ERJ 145. Definitely not a giant with 47 seats! I had my quickest takeoff ever (needed <1000 m for accelerating), and than a very bumpy flight at cruising altitude.

I love small planes! Must have been fun!

My next flight will be to Bangalore via Delhi the first week of March.
New plane on my list: The 787 Dreamliner, 3 times from the 4 flights. Looking forward to it though i have heard lots of negative feedback. My flight back to Shanghai is daytime, so I have booked a seat next to the window hoping to catch a glimpse of the Himalayas.

Maybe you are right. I don't know where's the point of losing the control. And maybe he did not see the building (only suspecting?), as the nose of the airplane is facing a bit upwards.

I won't ever try ATR planes.
