On behalf of Cas and myself I have the honor of inviting you to the Flaming Exhaust event, a double live race, taking place on Sunday the 3rd of July, at 13:00 UTC, which corresponds to:
Sunday 10:00 Buenos Aires
Sunday 15:00 Budapest
Sunday 23:00 Brisbane
The races will be run using the "Le Stunts" (http://forum.stunts.hu/index.php?topic=2801.0) format, where you have 12 minutes of realtime to produce a replay of 8 minutes in length. Replay handling is allowed, but every time you rewind eats into that clock!
As the last race did, we included an element to honor the last live race winner: alanrotoi. This is why the first race I present today will be run with his Lola Cosworth INDY (http://forum.stunts.hu/index.php?topic=3928.0), a fabulous fast car with slightly tricky steering, a wonderful balance between realism and gameplay. Everyone drives a different paintjob, so reserve yours fast! ;D
The track for this race will be The Journey. As I prepare for the 7th move in my adult life, I made a track that passes by the 5 towns and cities I lived in (plus 5 more I only worked in.) Fun fact about this track: counting 5 people per boat, barn or mill, 10 per bar and gas station and 50 per apartment block, this real world inspired map can handle the population density of the real area.
The route for this track is: at every split, go straight. Shortcuts are allowed as long as you don't pass any scenery elements (buildings, trees) on the wrong side.
Layout inspired by a trick ZdnBurns posted (http://forum.stunts.hu/index.php?topic=3926.60) in the thread of the last live trace.
The other track for this event is a musically inspired masterpiece: The Alan Parsons Project. A challenging track that will test the drivers to their limits as they try to keep their finishing time within 12 minutes.
Are you confused yet, at how to handle a live race on all that? I know I am! Hills, slaloms, elevated corners, a loop over the water, what madness!
We're also keeping a little bit of hype up our sleeves for this one. We will unveil our car pick and maybe one or two additional rules later. ;) Okay, one car-hint: we will be going fast.
As always we will be looking for volunteers to make a single last minute change to the tracks (a track element or nearby scenery) as an anti-cheat measure. I personally would prefer volunteers who don't like placing slaloms. 8)
So, are you hyped, pipsqueaks? Are you ready for a double dose of live racing action? Will you be there? We will. See you on the tracks.
Speedy greetings,
Cas and Overdrijf

So, are you hyped, pipsqueaks?
So much!! ;D
Let me add something. I would not use the initial banked road because that jump could make a difference between automatic and manual transmission. Also if somebody has a better shifting will also have an advantage. Just something non-jumping thing would be more fair.
It will be cool!! Can't wait :D

Sounds like a good choice for the last minute change. A regular straight piece does not work with the trick unfortunately, but there are several other options.
You can use this element. It won't be connected to the real track and you have a paved road from the middle of the square.
Wait a minute... is that map the Netherlands? I just realized :D
Maps look great, I so want to race on these :D
Thanks for organizing! I will also take part.
I'm in! :) I'd also like to reserve the attached paint job for the Lola Cosworth Indy.

I well you what: you can make the last minute modification if you don't tell people exactly what it's going to be.
I forgot to actually attach the tracks. ;D Added them now!
Please reserve the attached paintjob for me.
The green-with-red-details livery for me, please!
Nice tracks! "The Journey" feels very "Formula 1", and the junctions are usually easy to follow. Except one bit, in the attachment below: I found the extra wavy road confusing while driving, maybe it could bit improved / cut out?
"A.P.P." is a cruel one, in particular the first half :D Makes for a nice race on the edge of your seat! One detail here as well: the hill eats into the banked corner, and the car sometimes glitches out without warning. Might be worth adding one more hill square to avoid that.
Quote from: alanrotoi on June 17, 2022, 09:42:04 PM
Wait a minute... is that map the Netherlands? I just realized :D
Well it definitely is 😊
Quite a good representation to.
Only the big River are actually several rivers flowing through the country in roughly the same direction.
I live in between them.
So basically overdrijf has flooded my house with this map ;D
Quote from: dreadnaut on June 18, 2022, 10:59:51 AMI found the extra wavy road confusing while driving, maybe it could bit improved / cut out?
The extra road here represents the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. So I has a design purpose. I feel it must stay, but maybe some pieces can be inverted or something to be less confusing.
But it is not that confusion. If you drive the right way around it is quite straightforward.
QuoteThe route for this track is: at every split, go straight.
Thank you for honouring me! I sign up for light blue/black paintjob :D
Oh and for those who want to reserve a paintjob here are all:
I'll pick the Race For Kicks look: black and yellow! :)
And yes, I think APP will need a couple of touches to prevent some issues like those described. For that one, the cars allowed will be..... all of the DTM pack! :) So, for the same purpose, you may want to start reserving one of the cars and one of the paint jobs.
I'll take the orange and white INDY on the Dutch map (although I'm open to switching to red white and blue ;)), and I think I'll go for the Zakspeed colors BMW, the dark green one. (I think it's paint job 2, or maybe 3.) Edit: don't request non-existent paint jobs Overdrijf, Zakspeed was a Mercedes team.
Made a touch to the track to fix what Dreadnaut pointed out! Also added the rule that, on every lap, the car must pass south west of this barn seen in the picture. This is to prevent dual-way switching.
Uploading the updated version of APP. Of course, it will still have a last-time modification.
I'd like to reserve the attached paint job for the BMW M3 E30 DTM.
I'll use the Audi V8, also with R4K colours, ha, ha
Audi Quattro V8 in the chic special paint please :)
Wait, Zakspeed is a Mercedes paint job. :o
(Honestly the Mercedes might be the best of the 3 in terms of paint, it just has a bit more flexibility in the possible patterns, while the stripes on the BMW were complex enough to make it so that that's basically all the model can handle.)
I'll have the BMW with paint job 5, the light green one.

Ah, the "proudi", good choice. That was a fun paint scheme to work on.
Three days until race day! Time to start running practice laps in between finishing your perfect Zakstunts run and getting your first runs on the new R4K track in! Too much racing! Is there even such a thing?!

As afterparty there is the CCC track kickoff on Monday 8)
We're going to have lots of action! :)
So how many of us are confirmed for the live event already?
Unfortunately I can't. I have a dance show to attend to. (Two of my daughter's preform.)
That starts half a hours before the race. ;)
So no chance 😂
I'm ready!
The only detail is that Covid has sneaked into my house :o I'm still healthy myself, hiding in a room, and hopefully I'll still be OK on Sunday!
Oh, black-red-purple BMW for me!
Edit: oh, there's another chipped piece of road in A.P.P. — doesn't seem to affect driving, but could be fixed to make the track editable in Stunts.
I'm not 100% sure I will be able to race, as my laptop's hard drive is failing and it might not survive until Sunday. If I make it, though, I will race with the blue/yellow Mercedes DTM, and with the blue/yellow/red Lola.

COVID messed up things here to. It moved a work thing to Sunday morning. Took Saturday off from work so can attend a different show of my girls.
I still may not make it to the live race though. But there is a chance.

Final clarification for this rule, because I didn't realize before that this could cause a disagreement: this is about the physical model of the scenery. Because going into the replay to see whether your wheels hit something is not very live race friendly. This is particularly relevant for the gas station down south. If you passed on the correct side of the main building itself it doesn't matter that you drove over the black asphalt, or even through the gas pumps.

Yes it can be done.
I still don't know how to put all the information.the best would be to have each laptime of every pipsqueak but there might not be the space for it. Alternatives if it won't work?
Just total time and last lap time I think.
At the end, best lap and average lap time over the full laps. And a map with final position and ranking.
Something like that 🙂
Posting versions of the tracks we raced that only have a pine tree of difference so that we can validate Daniël's replays to be new. This is still unofficial, but it will be a good way to be able to compare laps and to have him participating with us in the event :)

From the times on the forum it looks like you're right. You both did nine laps, and then ended where your numbers on the map are.
The error might come from my post of Frieshansen's laptimes, where the last line starts with 8:00.00, which could be skimmed as "did 8 laps". No wait, that doesn't make sense.
Yes, frieshansen who got nr8 is farther than me with 7. So those numbers should be swapped 8)

Yeah I thought it was a good idea if we're racing with german cars we should have also music from there :)
The previous song is "Legacy" a song from "Full Throttle" game and it was proposed by Cas :D I
Awesome video!
The racing is surprisingly easy to follow for how little of the screen is actually used for each driver. Another advantage of the simple limited colors false shaded polygon style I suppose. Good design to try out options like that.
I didn't realize how far ahead* I actually was in the early stages of that first race.
One thing I'm only noticing now is that the maps included in the video are the original maps before final modifications. That's not really a complaint**, I like those maps, but it is a fun thing to notice.
*Ignoring my blatant cheating of using way too much time for resetting.
**And even if it was, you'll always keep finding things like that on a project with this kind of complexity.
Thanks! Yes you were leading almost the first half of the race, about 4 minutes.
I would add a "Man of the race" and/or "Man of the Event" price for live events. Everybody, pipsqueaks and spectator, would vote for the MoR or MoE and give the reasons and feedback. For example, for the 1st race I would vote Duplode because he took the lead at the half of the race and then finished 1st. For the second race I would vote Cas because the duel against Overdrijf. For the Man of the Event would be Overdrijf for being in both duels or KyLiE because he was also fighting two duels, in the 1st race against me and in the second against Duplode.
Wow! Great production, Alan! And some very nice racing indeed. I guess Kylie and me would be exchanging positions till the end in the second race, weren't it for a couple silly mistakes and time pressure on my side. (Nice work on that hill cut from you, by the way!)
By the way, story time.
We had both the tracks ready when Cas started (well, continued) looking for a name and logo that would tie the tracks together. For the Alan Parson's Project track he was (of course) thinking of something with music, and just in general because it's a race event he was thinking something like lightning, or rockets, or something else cool. The only music I could really connect to The Journey was road music, like born to be wild, route 66, rock and roll means always on the road kind of stuff. One song in particular stuck out, being as the map is the Netherlands, a Dutch trucker song called (translated) "with the flame in the pipe (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3AQqGMkLZA)".
It's not at all a cool racing song (I'm very happy with the song selection for the video), which is why we didn't make the link explicit coming up to the event, but that's where the Flaming Exhaust name initially came from. Pixelarting a logo did the rest.
I love background stories, they complete the scene :D.
If we make another DTM race I would vote that pilots must choose from the cars they didn't race yet. For example I raced with BMW so I should choose between Audi or Mercedes.

Your duel against duplode in the second race was awesome and also it was Cas vs Overdrijf. The best is that both were duels between different cars. BMW vs Mercedes and Audi vs BMW. It means how good balanced are DTM cars so this is another reason to thank Overdrijf.
Hey! I've taken some time to post here. Busy week!
The video looks really very professional and I too am very happy with the soundtrack. One of the songs, I had the opportunity to choose myself. When Alan asked if I could recommend any songs, I quickly threw a buch that came to my mind, but it was only one of them that Alan decided to use and it's also the one that I chose the most eagerly. I'm talking about "Legacy", by The Gone Jackals. I know the song as the opening theme of the 1990s adventure game Full Throtle.
The making of the event is pretty much like Overdrijf described. Not much I can add. We had to very different and very good ideas and we tried to blend them as well as we could, but at the same time, it's the uniqueness of each track that gives the most value to the personality of the event. It's been a lot of fun to organise it and even more fun to share it with you guys and participate!
Choosing the Man of the Race and Man of the Event sounds great, but I think I have to sit and watch each race more closely and paying special attention to each pipsqueak individually before choosing.
