as long as you don't need to use it for collaborating with word users on shared documents or creating presentations, you should be fine.

Decision about the old notebook: it will be repaired, because I still need some WinXP compatible programs installed on that (rarely, but still...) - there are several softwares I couldn't install on Win8 64bit or couldn't start even in XP compatible mode.

And it is also better for Stunts...

Uhm, wasted money in my opinion. Your new laptop would have no trouble running a virtual machine, and there's an easy way to do it with windows xp mode —if you really need to run old software, of course.

Not sure about Stunts, but if you were playing in dosbox before, dosbox works exactly the same on Xp as it does on 8.

XP compatibility: unless your program is too specific, having only a patch to run under XP (e.g. my damned old MS / IR spectra viewers or the dictionary software from 1995). And it is also better for some old games, like NFS Porsche Unleashed or F1 2002.

Stunts: I played under pure XP, without DOSBox. Handling was a LOT BETTER. In DOSBox, I have problems even with left corners (at least in noRH, but replay handling is also harder).

Earlier I thought tablet is useless, but now it seems it would be useful in my work - especially at meetings and trials, to avoid carrying tons of printed documents.

Yesterday my HD was only found by the BIOS after a few reboots. I am taking bets on when it will go kaput  ::)
234 days later, it finally gave up. This message is being sent from the text-only browser in the Arch Linux install CD. (Backups are right at hand, thus everything is fine :))

RIP!

The HD in my trusty ThinkPad x40 also died. Am considering plugging in a cheapo 8gb SSD and turning it into a native Stunts and retro DOS game machine...

skid Windows 8, Virtualdub can't recognize the ZMBV codec... meanwhile Free Media Player can run those videos. What the hell?

Blergh. As a possible alternative, this video editor seems to support ZMBV (I used it in Windows only once many years ago, so I have no clue on how good it is): http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

Hmmm... I have to admit that smartphone is an acceptable substitution for browsing the web when I have no possibility/mood to carry a computer.
