Pickell said there were many glitches in the physics engine of the game, such as being able to brake when in mid-air

This is not a glitch. In  my game you can brake or accelerate while in mid-air (besides the rocket), which I mentioned in README.txt (simcar-6.1.2).

Accelerating while the car is in the air pushes the front of the car up and the rear down (i.e. if the wheels are pushed in one direction, the car is pushed in the other direction). This is the only way in which the car can be controlled during jumps and is necessary for obtaining a good position at landing.

Update: I succeeded once (with car 4). I will try to post the video after editing it.

I don't think we (and Wikipedia, etc.) actually disagree on that: you can hit the brakes on air, and it does have an effect. (It's just that the car slows down only when you touch the ground, rather than immediately while you are mid-air.)

By the way, it turns out the Wikipedia article on Stunts was significantly expanded a few months ago. Thanks for drawing my attention to it!

I also failed with the Mercedes DTM: it almost succeeded but despite many attempts I could not complete the landing.

Indeed, I remember it being difficult with the DTM cars -- I didn't manage it last time around. Later I will give it a try with RH.

Step 4: Once the front wheels have left the ramp to keep the throttle open and give the bars a little tug back. Keep the power on so that the rear wheels have enough momentum to perform the back flip. Now the real fun begins. Once you are in the air you can rev up your bike a little to increase the rotation.

For front flips the brakes are used instead of the acceleration.
