This is such big news! I will say congratulations when the baby is born, but I really hope all goes well, and I would really love to meet Zak(ina) junior.
A joyful pregnancy-period to both of you!

Okay embryo, you better have a Y-chromosome!

I'm really happy for you and Andi. But there's still a long way to go, still only a small embryo.

Definitely I would be at least this happy with a girl.

By the way since we found out his gender, our baby is super-active and kicking extra hard. Even I can feel it very definitely though he has still 4 month before birth. Looks like he'll be hyperactive as I am :)

We have settled on the name with a 98% certainity rate :D

: Re: Family topic

anyway the original selection of boy names, guess which one we chose!
please consider that the baby will not only get my family name (Ács), but also Andi's, and in Hungary the first name follows the family name.  so he'll be called:

Ács-Pongó ......

Barnabás
Bendegúz
Brúnó
Döme
Keve
Jákob
Merse
Máté

(sorry, Ayrton and Zak were not in the list  ::))

Bruno would be redundant with Pongo because of the "o" finish. I think Mate would be the best with the name, but it's just my opinion according to the list. Chris would have been much better anyway. :P

That can be done, no problem.

About names, if once I have children, I would like to make an agreement with the girl before the child's sex is known: I'll determine the name if it's a girl, she'll if it's a boy. I'd insist on Laura for my daughter's name, but if we agree on that the name shouldn't follow names of ex-loves, it can be Lilla, Anita, Renáta or Klára, too. I found it gayish to find out my son's name, but if the girl really wants me to determine it, the boy would inherit my first name, Ákos.

: Re: Family topic
: zaqrack October 14, 2011, 09:15:59 +02:00
China.

giving birth at home would mean at least 6 months at home - work does not allow me to do so and we do not want to be separated for this long.

So we opted for a full healthcare insurance provided by my employer (was one of the requirements I stated for relocating to Shanghai) and plan to give birth in an international hospital in Shanghai - which would bring astronomical costs I cannot otherwise afford. Shanghai is REALLY expensive.

Governmental Chinese hospitals would be cheap and on par with the service level provided at home - but there is always a lot of waiting and little care involved.

As far as I know that means we will also have to give a Chinese name to our baby :)

He was born in the year of the Dragon - a "Dragon Baby". The luckiest and best from all of the Chinese zodiac. Since I don't care much about such things, did not investigate more in detail.

Barnabás started kindergarten last week. He was not accepted to any of the local kidnergartens which met our standards, so he is attending an international kindergarten, but due to financial reasons only for 3 days per week - which I don't mint.
The kindergarten and teachers are great, truly international. 10 nationalities in Barni's class, including 5 kids being non-Asian.

He still cries every day a bit as of course it is a huge change being without us, but I feel he will get used to it soon.
What really is shocking to me how much kindergarten has changed since I was a small kid - a school diary is maintained, which we receive every day including feedback on what they did and also pictures about Barni in the various activities! Really great thing!

Of course it does not beat Korea, where you get access to the kindergarten's CCTV and watch your kid online playing. Not sure I would like this though, let's leave the kids some privacy.

I know I would like it. You don't have to be watching your kids all the time, they just give you the possibility to do it. I would do it once or twice a day, probably when it's feeding time.
Of course I have to meet a girl first, get her to fall in love with me, get serious about it and then have kids...

Totally. Security difference is about zero and it just introduces a relationship of mistrust between parents and kindergarten teachers.

Barnabas already ran some laps, but he is not yet on competition level. He enjoys playing Stunts with me. We usually race against Skid :)

How lovely  :) I find it particularly amusing that he is watching an RH session. (A bad RH session, however, is not too unlike a Roadrunner cartoon: repeated attempts at reaching a goal that always fail with something exploding...)

Maybe you'll be the first to participate in a Stunts contest while having exactly three kids, but we should not forget that Krys Toff has four kids.

Stunts Rabbits (Is there this expression in English (rabbits) to refer who have a lot of kids?)

Looking forward to more little McKrackens in the world :-)

Nice names!

Is Franciska because the Pope? Here some people named their children "Francisco" because him.
: Re: Family topic
: Shoegazing Leo October 26, 2015, 02:57:58 +01:00
Franciska (Francisca in portuguese) is not common here. Francisco is common. These names have nicknames: Fran or Chico/Chica (more common) in Brazil. Brazil has a tradition to give short nicknames for some names:
- Nando/Nanda or Fer for Fernando/Fernanda
- Dani for Daniel, Daniele, Daniela and another forms
- Zé for José (Joseph)
And so on.

: Re: Family topic

group answer!

No connection with the pope, we just happened to both like this name.

Panka is indeed has the best rhythm from these choices. My only concern with his name is that in Hungarian if a word ends with -ka or -ke that means small. So not sure it is a proper name for an adult. It is actually a nickname version of Panna, which is a nickname version of Anna. But sounds great :)
Almost everyone has shorter nicknames here, which is usually ending with -ka/-ke or -i. If we take my family:

Andrea-> Andi
Péter -> Peti
Barnabás -> Barni
Richárd -> Ricsi
Róbert -> Robi
Márton -> Marci
Marianne -> Manka (my mother)

Olivia: In Hungarian family name comes first, followed by the "first" name. We have chosen to relay both my and my wife's family name to our kids, so that would read Ács-Pongó Olivia. The double O is too strange to pronounce :)

Karina may be global but very rare in Hungary :)

Zak family's names in portuguese and related nicks:

Andréa/Andreia if it's female or André if male -> Andi/Andy/Déia or Deco (male)

Pedro -> sometimes is Pê
Barnabé -> Barney (it's not common this name)
Ricardo -> Rick, Rico and rarely Cardo.
Roberto -> BetoMartin/Martim -> not common nickname
Mariana/Mariane -> Mari/Nane/Nana

When it's small, you can use -inho (man) or -inha (woman) in the end, but in some cases, the last letter will be supressed or adapted: i.e: Riquinho, Betinho, Marizinha.

I personally have 4 kids  8)

Oldest born in the year of the Dragon.
@zak, one of yours as well I believe

Just hope for the best and prepare my kids as well as possible to do there part.

I don't have kids. I hope today's kids can be happy with so little to play with compared to our era. We here met computers and video games, but had a good dose of classical playing before... I think most of us, at least. But nowadays video games seem to be the only thing. Children are the only humans that know why they want what they want. Adults tend to lose that.
: Re: Family topic
: Daniel3D January 09, 2021, 12:56:26 +01:00
It's a challenge to get the kids off screen. Also because we as adults have trouble laying the phone aside.
But my kids spend most of their time off-screen. Just old school playing.
It takes more effort to help them find there game, it's easy to let them sink into online oblivion but we don't want that.
We have found a line that makes the digital world an inspiration for the real world. It's incredible to see wat a 3, 5 or 8 year old can do compared to my youth.

: zaqrack January 09, 2021, 02:18:47 +01:00
@Daniel3D wonderful family! You are not the fist one with 4 kids - we had the legendary Krys Toff, who back in 2003-2006 managed to race very consistently and even attend the World Stunts Meeting in Denmark, already with 4 kids, while most of us were still youngsters without a family :)

Regarding screen time - all my kids are in Waldorf schools and we follow the same principles at home - no screens or electronic devices until they turn 14. Absolutely none - exactly for the reason Cas stated - so they can discover the world on their own, with their own hands. Of course for this to work we need a community where other parents also adhere to the same, so there is no tension between the kids. Sometimes it is very hard (especially trying to show a good example while my work is bound to the screen) but totally worth it. Their creativity and ability to discover new things is amazing - I truly believe they can later on contribute a lot to build a better world.
And while they are growing up, they are doing well - e.g. this morning my oldest son was busy with building his own "treehouse" and setting up traps on the neighboring empty plot, my smaller boy (the dragon one :)) was helping me doing some woodworking and then I cooked lunch with my girl a bit later.

Attached a pic of the full bunch ;)

You guys have really beautiful families and I admire how you manage to protect your children's creativity!

: zaqrackOf course for this to work we need a community where other parents also adhere to the same, so there is no tension between the kids.
This exact thing I've thought of so many times and believed it was virtually impossible to achieve in the current world, but seeing that you can do it, however hard, gives me hope :)

I really admire your choice in this.
We don't have the community to make a no screen concept work. (And I do believe that screens can have a inspirational and motivational function if used correctly. I'm also careful) we do look around for inspiration. We have Waldorf inspired playstand, balance board and slide in the living room. But we also take inspiration from Emmi Pikler and anthroposophical ideas.
The school we have chosen has a new and developing way of teaching. A (government required) solid base combined with a wide range of workshops.
I think we all thrive to find the best for our kids in the environment that they grow up in.
parenting unconditionally we call it. We set boundaries (of course) but they can choose their own path.
We will move to a new home next month with a bit more room. We will make a dedicated play room there. (No screens allowed) not that it will change much. But it will be nice to be able to walk around with breaking my neck over grimms and grapat toys  ::)

Great to see you lurking around :)

Yep, he looks very much like me and behaves also very similar like me at that age with some slight but major differences of course (no interest in math that I had, but an amazing artistic talent my wife had). Things like that. So an easy job for me to be his dad, just have to recall my own youth. However, I'm dreading his adolescence. I was an awful teenager. :D
: Re: Family topic

Makes me wonder, if hundreds of us were to suddenly become teenagers again and the world were full of second-time teenagers.... Would these second timers be more settled and careful or quite the contrary?  I find it hard to imagine XD  - I was a relatively peaceful teenager, also with an interest in math and other sciences. When I had to take them seriously, I didn't perform as well :P
