Title: Finally there: the superkart (version 1.0), plus special race event.
Post by: Overdrijf on August 20, 2010, 06:52:59 PM
Edit januari 2019: I added a suka 1.1.zip file to this post. This is the new 2019 update. It's a purely graphical fix of the 3D model. More information can be found in reply #36.

I've been away for a while, but thanks to a ridiculous amount of spare time in a few days I finally finished what I started. The following changes have taken place in that time:

Performance:
Didn't change really. I felt like the balance between realism, fun and being different from what is already available was pretty good. Just so I have something to type here I'll give a list of flat road top speed per gear:
1st gear 77 MPH
2nd gear 94 MPH
13rd gear 111 MPH
4rd gear 129 MPH
5th gear 143 MPH
6th gear 153 MPH

3D model:
A few minor changes, a bit of cleaning really. It still looks a bit buggy in the showroom, but there doesn't appear to be a whole lot I can do about that.

Dashboard:
Complete overhaul. Say goodbye to the bugs (well, except that one that made me drive up the wall ones in the replay I attached, but that one didn't come from the dashboard) and hello to a reasonably looking interior, compared to the last one at least. The kart is equipped with the latest in flashy steering wheels and digital technology. And the meters work pretty well this time around. It may look slightly unconventional in places, but you'll get used to it.

Okay, with that out of the way you'll notice that if you open the zip file there's a track inside, nice and small, like the car itself, called Craspher (Crashper's didn't fit). I am hosting a mini race event here on the forum, to give everybody the opportunity to get used to the kart and to see what they can do with it. To compete you must send me a replay, over PM or mail or something, before Sunday the 12th of September 20.00 central European daylight saving time, so that's GMT+2, but for many of us also the normal time. (It's not forum time though, in forum time replays have to be in before 19.00.)

If you send me your time before 20.00 on every Sunday or Thursday until that time (no need for a replay, I'll believe you) you'll end up on the scoreboard, which I'll try to update more or less as quickly as I can, here in this thread.

This is a RH race, although NORH is of course always allowed. On top of standard rules you MUST go through the loop and the cork. I don't care how you go through them, as long as you go through.

Any questions? Good. Let the games begin then, and don't hesitate to tell me that the kart is awesome (or not).

Lol, I tested if the dashboard was lower than any text being displayed, except for opponent near. Guess which one goes lowest... Looks quite funny really.

Scoreboard so far:
No entries yet.
(No downloads either.)

(By the way, just to get you curious: I started on a new project that is about as ridiculous as this one. It might be a while untill I'm happy about it, but I'm already quite far along with the model...)

Very agile, very funny, a super goKart, I like it, it's original.

Continue your good work with 100% new models ;)

I will. Although I've got a feeling I'm not as productive as you are, with two sortof finished already and a poll going for 1 or 2 more...

Yes there is. It's a bit convetional, going through the obstacles the official way, but it's a good time. ;)

Now that you mention it, "Additional Options" does not show in a PM. Zapper used external hosting (as did you ;)).

[EDIT]Oh, by the way, I'm very glad you joined in, but I'm affraid my own rules force me not to accept replays where people jump off the loop, no matter how neat a shortcut that provides, instead of going through them...  (Physically trough would be acceptable, but trough can not be interpreted as off). So I'll add your time to the scoreboard with a little remark behind it (fo fairness sake).[/EDiT}

No need to go out of your way - I was kind of in doubt on how I should understand the loop rule, but found it easier to just send the replay and see what would happen. I will redrive it soon  ;)

Since friday it have been silent days for me too, so I was wondering if someone would still come up and beat me. Nobody did. However, Duplode became the moral winner with a manual NORH no loopcut run almost managing to beat me in the proces.

Anyway, the final scoreboard looks like this. I thank all (oke, both) competitors for entering, and I'll see all of you around.

Overdrijf 0.44.80 (manual)
Duplode 0.45.35 (manual, NORH)
Zapper 0.50.60 (manual)

Well, there's an easy way to fix that. ;)
QuoteMaybe we should add it back for the next season...

Maybe.

I think there are several reasons the kart wasn't the biggest hit during its seasons in Zakstunts:
1 The top speed is low but the corner speed and acceleration high. This could give people the feeling that driver skill matters less, a small error costs barely any time.
2 The feel of the car is sometimes a little unintuitive to Stunts players, mostly because of its short wheelbase. The jump length is pretty short, and in the banked corners you sometimes have to steer towards the curve to stay on the road. Cornering is a matter of pressing and releasing the steering keys in any stunts car, but the short wheelbase exaggerates this even further. The top speed is clearly dictated by maximum revs rather than power curve (although this is the case for more cars, particularly those with overdrive bugs).
3 The car may be a little too distinctive. It's good on tracks with lots of corners. Normally every race has several viable cars, so you can pick one you like, but if the kart is getting near the top of its bonus curves and then a curvy track comes up it might become near impossible to compete in something else.
4 The more cartoony looks might not be to everyone's taste either.

I still really like my creation. There isn't a car I've used more since I restarted playing again yesterday. And I think it was cool it got to compete for two seasons. But it has its downsides. Who knows, it might be brought back into the pack one day, but Zakstunts is just as awesome without it. There are good reasons for people to like other cars better.

I do like the Kart! It's true that it works best on a rather specific kind of track, but it can be fun to drive. Furthermore, I don't think we actually had a bad race with it back when it was a ZakStunts car.

(Nice to see you around, Overdrijf  :))

Well yeah, but you're the Stunts physics master. The kart wouldn't even have been possible without your research.  ;)

I'm certainly up for anything. Inclusion or event or both. I always like a good excuse for karting. I'm willing to help too, making a track or running the contest in the forums or...

Thanks for the shout out in the announcements by the way. I'm curious now what other people think.

EDIT: I'm looking back through the archives now and I see it's been a big car shuffle since with models all having a few years in the limelight and maybe even coming back. It's a very dynamic car pool, I like it.

I could revive Race For Kicks (I had been thinking some time ago that I could do it and make some changes to it) and I'd be happy to include the Kart there!   In fact, I believe it's time that I would also learn the art of making cars for Stunts. It'd be great if we'd started producing a new generation of custom cars. Maybe a whole season oriented toward car and track creation?

Thinking along the lines of the last few posts...

You could do some sort of event with lots of custom cars. A "for your consideration" event if you will, with the purpose of getting feedback to select the cars for the next season. Throw in anything that has already been in Zakstunts, some that were considered at one point but passed over and some new stuff entirely.

The main problem would be how to make it an event where all those cars can compete and would thus be used. The usual bonus structure doesn't really work for a single race...

A race for kicks season about custom cars, tracks and stuff would of course be awesome.

I reckon the only way to make a race fair while testing cars that we're not sure how to compare to each other, is to use a single car per race. I can make R4K with its usual rules (OWOOT, allowing both RH and noRH) and test the Kart in one race and possibly other experimental cars in other races. The system works. I'd like to make a few touches to it, but it's already functioning, so I could quickly set up a race for the Kart. Where can I get the latest version of the Kart?

The suka.zip in the first post of this topic is the final version, the one that was used in Zakstunts. The same version can also be found here (http://scr.stunts.hu/mods.html).

If that zip is not the final version something went wrong somewhere...

The only other version I have a memory of publishing can be found in post 25 of this topic (http://forum.stunts.hu/index.php?topic=2294.25). Given the choice I would not recommend that version. The final one looks much better. I'm especially proud of the front wheels turning as the steering wheel turns.

Oops!  I've very just posted in the shoutbox in response to CTG, inviting him to post a track. But now I think if you would like to post a track for the Kart, it'd make more sense. Maybe, he'd like to make his track for another car?  Anyway, of course. How would I not let you post your own track for the Kart?  I better start a topic on the reopening of Race For Kicks.

O, I'm actually kind of curious what CTG would come up with for the kart. I just saw you asked me in that later post and replied. Just in general: I'm willing to design a track. And of course I'm willing to do it for the kart. That last one I did wasn't owoot friendly, but only one section...

If you do decide to "hire" me: when do you want it and are there any other requirements, like length?

By the way, I've dropped a few hints over the years that I was working on a kind of turbo van. That one will not be joining the competition. I drove it for a few meters since I came back and I realized why it was never as fun to work on as the kart: it's quite boring to drive. The game doesn't have a lot of options to bring across the feeling of driving something big and heavy without compromising on it being a good vehicle. I might be hatching another idea for a future project, but it's kind of complex...

(Or maybe I'll change my mind again or have some sort of brilliant idea that fixes everything. Anyway: don't expect it anytime soon. I'll happily share what I had so far with any boring vehicle enthusiasts out there.)

Yeah, no problem for me. I'll organise the tournament for reopening and I'm willing to open it up for people to create their tracks and request a car for them. You can follow the other thread I started about Race For Kicks.

I'm revisiting this thread to post a 2019 update to this car.

Given how atypical the vehicle is and how many bad modeling practices I used while making the 3D model it actually worked surprisingly well. I'm not here to do anything about how atypical the car is, but I did fix the bad modeling practices I could find. This update renders the car more smoothly. The only thing I changed is the 3D shape. I also successfully resisted the urge to add a readme file and/or remove the track from the package posted below. I kept everything the same as in the 2010 version, except it looks less buggy in game. I also added just the 3D shape below, if you already have the superkart installed you can just paste that in and you'll get exactly the same experience as when you download the full zip file.

Thanks to Cas and Dreadnaut for showing renewed interest in this vehicle.
