In Denmark, it's a slow football season. FC Midtjylland is 11 points ahead in 1st place. FC København is 11 points ahead in 2nd place. In the bottom, two teams seem clearly marked out for relegation. Only the race for 3rd place is fierce.

But the whole season has been eclipsed by one great story: the story of Hobro IK, a team from a small Jutland town playing in the best league for the first time ever.

Now, Hobro is not like the other teams in the Superliga. They are a team of mainly amateur players. Their budget was low even for the 2nd best league. When they took 1st place in the 2nd league, everyone thought they would lose it before the end of the season. When they managed to secure promotion, they became the "certain relegée".

Now, with just 8 matches left of the season, the league table tells a different story:

When Hobro was promoted to the Superliga, they rallied investors from local enterprises and managed to raise enough money to upgrade their stadium for the minimum requirements and to buy one high quality attacking player. They bought Quincy Antipas from Brøndby. He's still the only foreign player in their entire squad.

Now, while bigger clubs with more money spend their transfer windows buying a whole handful of foreign players and sometimes end up having no success with any of them, the story of Hobro IK is that they spend all their money to buy just one good player, and Antipas has been playing better football at Hobro than he ever did anywhere else.

It had been about a couple of years since the days when FC København played a 1-1 draw with Guardiola's FC Barcelona in the Champions' League on this stadium and the days when they defeated Manchester United and Juventus here, but still it sent shockwaves out when Hobro IK returned to Northern Jutland with a 0-3 victory.

Here's Hobro on a map. It's the 24th biggest town in Denmark, accommodating 11,736 citizens.

After a surprise win in the 1st round and a few more good results, the media began to pick up the story about the "authentic" amateur team from Hobro. They were portrayed as carrying the true spirit of football, using humility, clever tactics, dedication and a sense of community to battle all the established and commercialised teams with more money.

Still, we all had a feeling that it couldn't last. They were riding on a wave of joy and partly luck, but when season really dug in, it would be clear that they were, after all, a much weaker team, and the fairy tale would come to an end. We all thought Hobro was a nice dream. But this has not happened.
Now that the dream is not ending, we have to start thinking about it in different terms. Maybe "club spirit" and organic development can really compete with bigger wallets?

This small group of fans has had a lot to celebrate during this season and the previous.

Wth 8 matches to go and a fantastic form - having beaten Brøndby IF just this weekend - Hobro IK has a real chance of finishing third and qualifying for the Europa League playoffs. At the same time, they have sold young forward Emil Berggreen to Braunschweig in the 2nd Bundesliga, and top scorer Mads Hvilsom is rumoured to have a price tag of 7,5 million DKK (~1 million EUR). No Gareth Bale, but a lot more money than the club at the small stadium in Hobro has earned before.

Another rumour is that FIFA has heard of Hobro IK and are planning to make a documentary about them.

Next round is at home vs leading team FC Midtjylland. Even if they lose, no one is going to think the dream is ending.
But we can't be quite sure.
