I hate this feeling... Have you ever felt that? 75 minutes left and I know there's no real chance to pass my exam... Too important subject to loose... :?
Oh, that feeling again... 4 hours left and 380 pages... :(
READY!!!!!!!!! :) :D :) 8) :P    :P 8) :) :D :)
All exams passed? Then get back to race!!!
And? Results?
Get back to race JTK!
O.K., sorry
This week I'll also finish examining probably. I have a reduced semester because of life problems, mental disease, but now I have 5 of my 7 exams. Probably both of my remaining exams will be on Thursday. I hope I won't fail!
Whohohohooooo, new record in non-learning: I have 2 hours left to learn 400 pages for an organic chemistry test. You know this is impossible - being failed is almost sure... :?
Good luck both of you! :?
Damn, it happened... :-S I failed on a test. Subject is Safety in Chemical Engeering - reason is mainly that the teacher hates me because I wasn't a very regular visitor on his lessons (0/11 lessons :) ). The sad thing is that I deserve at least a weak three (means average mark in our 5 mark system) on my test. Tomorrow I'll go and ask the teacher to re-read my test and give a better mark. Well, I see only very few chance for the success...
 :D  :D  :D  Gigantic LOL! :D  :D  :D
The teacher forgot to correct one of the pages - that's why he said sorry, watched the second page and gave a strong 4! :D
My only problem is now, that one of my rivals arrived to Budapest to meet B?be - alias B?bszlee (as they were classmates in secondary school). Now they went somewhere together. I'm a bit afraid of this chap, I feel that he's dangerous for my position (two years ago he tried to steal B?be). Of course I trust in my girlfriend, and she says they are only friends, but I'm still in panic. What's more: the guy is too self-confident, his behaviour with me is similar to a man - dirty rat hateful connection. I think changed rules are true: I'm the human in this case... :x
I have passed both my exercise exams :)
4 from cooking and 5 from serving
yeeeeeeepeeeeeeeeee :)
and i am on the other side of the mirror.... i will give an exam to my students on monday...........
then they will get a silly essay subject to finish the school year :)
and of course, they all hate me :D
Quote from: "al il professore"they all hate me :D
If you don't race, and especially if you don't update Stunts'R Us, I'll hate you too.
Damn I never learn from my mistakes... :? 150 minutes left, still 16 questions are dark for me from 37.
I also think I'm failed...
Aaaaaaaaaah luck from heaven, I got a 4! :D
My last exam went as follows:
The subject was ancient history, one of my very favourite subjects, so I had decided to go for a 13 (top-grade, which is only given for extraordinary performances). So I studied quite a lot. At least a lot compared to the amount of time I usually study prior to an exam. When the day came, I didn't feel totally ready. I knew if I drew Alkibiades' or Aristofanes' speeches I wouldn't do very well. But if I drew Socrates or Oedipus, I would have a chance to get that 13. So I go in and draw. Alkibiades' speech. Crap. In the preparation room, I noticed how little I knew about it, and I almost panicked. The teacher came in 4 minutes earlier than I had thought (!) so I wasn't ready at all. I thought it was going to go completely wrong... but then I used my ability just talk from one end and keep talking, figuring things out while I talk and drawing conclusions I hadn't even thought about before. So at the end, after a messy and unstructured, but very inspired performance, I got a 10 (translates to a good 4 in Hungarian I guess). Phew.
I'm not failed!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Microbiology exam, 3rd June, 11:00 (written exam):
Bacteriology 53/60
Virology 17/20
Micology 5/20
Total 75/100.
It is a mediocre (3) in normal circumstances, but it can happen that the teacher will modify the score limits because of the low performance of the group (half of the examiners wrote under 50), so it can be a good (4). Wow! :)
Exam period is here again, will us be failed? It is hard to think i won't, because of Laura... CTG, let's fail together! :)
Two main exams left and I'll get a degree!!!!! :-D
Good luck!
One will be in March, the other one in June. But thanks in advance. :)
I have
- 3 szigorlat
- 1 difficult exam
- a few easier exams
- the diploma work
to go.
State exam: January 2007
Bah, after the big annual presentaion in the morning I'll get fired from PhD... :(
Usually I can survive these situations with improvisation but something makes me say this time I won't be able to complete the minimal level... >:(
Nah, trust your ability to bring it out... anyway, out of curiosity, what the subject would be?
SURVIVED!!! It was a presentation about my last year's work for the company I'm working for in collaboration with my university. It seems I have the ability to sell the big nothing as an important result (maybe I should change profession to politican or manager)... ;D

Okay, it wasn't that "empty" presentation, we built a brand new lamp... ;)
Well done! :)
It's 4 years since my last post in this topic, and I'm still sweating over exams... Currently writing for my bachelor degree. I'm reading the most difficult/advanced/boring texts one can imagine in humanities!! Jacques Derrida and Jürgen Habermas. Don't ever start reading them. Derrida has a certain vividity, but it's completely impossible to guess what the hell he's talking about. Habermas is very boring, and it's also impossible to figure out what he's talking about unless you're already a professor, just got up 30 minutes ago and have already had 3 cups of coffee.

Krys: yes, I remember, sorry about that :) It's a big thing, because I don't believe in univocal readings, so I have to make a serious, probably complex, reading. And as I'm already busy writing actual papers for the university, I don't have much mental energy left for literature criticism here :-/. But I will do it! I must!

According to me, there is 3 levels of comprehension of this text. But I fear one of them is impossible to find if you don't know well French history of 2nd part of XIXth century. "Le bateau ivre" has been written in 1871, it's an indication. ;-)
Anyway, no problem, I'll wait.
Then I will not do a historical reading :)
Bah, another die/survive meeting with all of my bosses today at 3 PM, problem is mainly my former presentation and the lack of plans for the future (last one year of PhD). That sucks!
You know what to do with fingers! ;)

But this kind of self-pity saves me from a possible big fiasco - I prepare for it every time.
I do the same... And every time, it really is never sure because it depends on a really good performance. We just usually manage this when under pressure.

The existence of the word "queen" is the failure of the society. Only a male person should reign over a country.
1. Queen used to just mean the king's wife.
2. What about bees, do you demand male rule among those too? ;D

The king's wife is the king's wife. Queen is a maleish b*tch. Bee queens don't erect my dick, so at this aspect, I don't care about them.
Mmmmm, maleish bitches.... *drool

I want to break free (this time dedicated to Akoss)
Queen
I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free
I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love
It's strange but it's true
Hey, I can't get over the way you love me
like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free, baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free
But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without,
Living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So baby can't you see
I've got to break free
I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free
Ooh yeah
I want to break - yeah yeah
;D
There was a vote in 1999 started by a big Hungarian commercial radio station (Danubius) to decide which 500 songs to keep on the repertoir for 00's. The winner was 'Queen - I want to break free'. :D (on the other hand a very undeserved second place for an actual crappy song, Eiffel 65 - Blue...)
This is a proper thread to vent off a bit: a relatively calm semester made me unaware of myself being affected by a sort of mild "writer's block" - the ones that make you sit on your computer and stare for a long time to a blank Word page, unable to put down your thoughts and getting distracted by every little thing. And then I suddenly find myself sitting on two big reports, on completely unrelated subjects, to be started with just a few days remaining... which are absorbing the hell off me except for occasional sanity breaks (like this one) through the last 96? hours. :-\ At least that worked as shock therapy for my previous troubles...
Just indulge yourself completely in the work. Suspend any thoughts about comfort for yourself until the day you are finished. Relax only to optimize your work force. When you are finished, be really nice to yourself in some way!

Who will believe me if I say I'm going to be fired today?
Okay, probably not fired. But my boss is interested in my work completed in July and August. Lazyness in the first few weeks of July (one or two days work), then came the holidays, the moving... so: nothing in the pocket. I won't be the worker/student of the month. I'm also expecting some really rude words...
Spin the situation somehow with rhetoric.
Or with other dirty tricks... ;D
Survived the first round, but I have to make a presentation for Wednesday - that will be a bit harder.
Next huge presentation in the morning: now I'm not afraid of being fired from PhD - but facing a new aspect: showing up some useless and not really valuable results would mean no job offers from them after the university...
But if I think it over... hmmm... I'm not sure if I really want to work for them in the future...

Completed - no extreme reactions so far. ;D
skid off, "Fowler"... My consultant from the university sent me an agressive voice e-mail to complete an exercise (abstract for a conference) in 24 hours.
Question: why does he send me e-mails when he knows that OFFICIALLY I can't check them without my computer (and I wasn't at the university today to use the PC in the lab)? Doesn't he know the well-known invention of Bell?
On the other hand he's not taking care about my projects when I'm available at the university. But if I stay away, he starts to screw... It's not obligatory for me to be there every day when I have no exercises like teaching or measurements - and I also can be at the factory because they give us the projects...
I have no energy and mood to write it.
Well, either work up the mood and the energy, or tell him to skid off (politely).

Really good job!
Damn it, last minute learning again. 9 am: very strict labour safety exam (fire, chemicals, etc.), 180 pages, I'm going to start reading in a few minutes, also want to sleep a bit. :-\

It's a bit more difficult in pharmaceutical industries... Exam was quite strict, some of the people failed - not me (flawless tests). ;D
As I mentioned that time, I was at a job interview in Norway one month ago. I have received the result - and yes, I have been failed! I guess my weak point is that I still haven't finished my PhD... Although I told them that it would be done until September 2010, they know that these promises don't guarantee anything, and they prefer to employ people who don't have anything to work on out of the company.
congratulations for failing! :D
I guess this is better for your family, and that is the most important.
Hot and good news at the end of the year: my latest scientific manuscript is accepted by a journal, that means I have 4 publications at the moment - so now I can officially start the PhD procedure. "Only" the thesis, a comprehensive analytical chemistry exam and a german language exam are missing. :D

Zero level at the moment. I used to learn it in primary school but since 1997 I haven't even say a sentence in German. ;D
Soviel ich weiss, diese Sprachprüfung beinhaltet mündlich + schriftlich Prüfungen und ein Hörtext.
Not bad for not having said a sentence for the past 12 13 years - you should pass easily then! :)

Using dictionary... ;D I think grammar won't be a problem, it's easy to re-learn (also the vocabulary, that's all about memory). The real difficulty will be talking in German.

That is true. On the other hand it should help if you are fluent in english already. On the same notion it is "easy" to learn spanish if you already speak french for example. I wasn't serious anyways. It's not like german is an important language in modern science.
Dennoch gibt es ein "simple english" (zum Beispiel: http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)) und leider kein leichtes Deutsch. Oder?
Babelfish, LOL (no translator, just a single dictionary)... That's why I'm not a german teacher, but a chemical engineer (probably with PhD in the next few months). And as I said before: I haven't talked in German since 1997.
I thought your German was pretty good. Any German would get what you're saying...
I'm totally losing my skills at the moment. I should really read a German book. And then a French book. And then pick up the Mandarin again. Hmm.

don't even remind me, I should also exercise my Mandarin - although I luckily I am past a point where its hard to forget the basics.
My German is stuck at the: "I understand almost everything but its hard for me to express myself" level.
On the contrary my Mandarin is described as: "I can tell just about anything, but its really hard to understand what I am told".
Funny :)

Only 8 days left until my PhD final exam (szigorlat), and I have learned almost nothing so far. Final exam means 2-3 hours, 3 teachers and 3 subjects chosen by myself from a list. In my case, these are Physical Geology (=1000 pages), Sedimentology (=700 pages) and Research Methods in Stratigraphy (=only 200 pages, but this is the one which will be totally new for me)
It's possible that you'll see a post from me in this topic next Wednesday...

skid off ITK! Still no results.
why ITK? there are many more language exams out there that are actually useful.
You need two language exams for the PhD. The first one should be English (mid-level; completed several years ago and now I'm even worse than basic level) and the other one can be even a basic level. ITK seemed to be the easiest way for me. But I also want to pass medium level this year - not in ITK, but ÖSD or TELC.
Semi-official results from ITK's website:
Oral exam: 51/60 (18/20 from "Hörverstehen")
Written part: 50/50 (maybe it's a false result)
so basically you could have gone for the medium-level after all. congratulations!

Let me guess: you will work in the university.
It's a city planning job. I'm against most city planning, so I want to take the job of a city planner and then sit down and do nothing and leave it to the citizens to shape their own city :-)
It's what I wrote my thesis about, I know quite a lot about it and have made 'city life' projects. Also, there are three open spots, not just one (which would probably be filled by an architect), so there should be room for a Modern Culture major like me.

I can't imagine a self-organized city in Hungary. Moral is too low, number of deviant people is too high.
It's a big question! I want to answer it, but I'll need time/motivation. As I said, I'm not against ALL city planning. However, I believe that the general tendency is to conduct far too incisive and (so-called) comprehensive planning.

Scientific mindset is good, but it can only get you so far. In the humanities, we are not fundamentally interested in what the world is like, but in what people feel like. In this area, there is an infinite number of problematiques that have never been addressed by material sciences and probably never will be. Some of them are very important for the quality of people's lives, and this includes the city space question. I will give some examples when I reply to Chulk's question.

Here is my opinion about city planning. I apologize for the delay :-) I didn't get the job, by the way. Job market is tough and after all, I don't have the technical abilities or even the theoretical architectural education to be an actual city planner. However, actual city planners don't possess the cultural insight or the understanding of urban life that I do, which is one of the great problems.
Anyway, here we go:
My view on city planning is left-liberal, like my general political views, as opposed to socialist or liberal-conservative. To me, the purpose of city planning is
regulation, and nothing else. The public authorities must make plans for urban areas in order to make sure that profit-driven entrepreneurs do not form city spaces in ways that are beneficient to themselves, but detrimental to the public - everyday people who walk in the streets. What's important - and what I meant by saying that I'm against city planning - is that authorities do not make rigid or detailed plans for any area. Authorities must allow for, and secure, a development that is orchestrated by many different independent agents who have great creative freedom in their design process. Authorities must only strive to make sure that no single agent shapes urban space in a way that hurts that hurts the surrounding area. This is known as 'context' to architects. When building, the task of the public authorities is to secure 1. Diversity, 2. Respect for context.
In Copenhagen, the municipal authorities and leading architects generally hold a very progressive view of architecture and city planning: they accept that good architecture is not achieved by designing great buildings, but by designing buildings and areas that interact fruitfully with their surroundings. They accept that in order to make good architecture, you need to consider many different things: local demographics, traffic flow (most importantly good conditions for pedestrians), local culture, architectural context, visual context and several different kinds of environmental issues. Many of them are even aware of these two crucial facts:
1. The desirability of pedestrian activity (walking, meeting, sitting or simply hanging around) in public spaces is essential not only to the quality of life of city dwellers, but also to the turnover of local businesses and to the attractiveness of the city in a national or regional context (which again generates income in terms of tourism and business investments).
2. The desirability of pedestrian activity in an urban public place cannot be determined by any simple set of factors, but is rather a very complex working-together of different factors, most importantly the simultaneous presence of positive factors appealing to many different kinds of people (if you don't agree with this, I'll explain in another post why it's so important).
They are aware of this, but still they make huge development projects, building up entire 'sub-cities' from scratch, letting the same people make all the important planning decisions in a large area and the entire shaping of this area depend on the given ideologies of a certain time.
These people have understood the importance of 'mixed primary functions' in an area (that people are present on the street for different reasons and at all times of the day), which has not been understood by socialist- or neo-capitalistic planners (resulting in large 'ghetto' residence areas populated either by poor people (with very high crime rates), or by rich people, creating segregation and even, in the long run, undermining democracy). What they have not understood is that it is impossible to lay down the aforementioned 'complex working-together of different factors' from above and all at once. In fact it is doubly impossible. First of all, it is impossible because truly diverse planning cannot be made by one agent at one time. A greater number of different ideas are needed, and there are 'trends of the time' that it is not possible to wrestle free from. A city area must develop bit by bit, in order to achieve diversity and in order to have the ability to adapt to ever-changing contexts. If it is laid down from above all-at-once, it will depend on the ideas on which it is based being not only perfectly grasping the complex mechanisms that make for a successful public space, but also on these ideas being permanently capable of securing a successful public space - that is, the conditions for this being constant. This is of course also completely impossible.
This is the problem. Planners have delusions of grandeur. They get seduced into thinking they can build a city. Even in liberal Copenhagen, we are still suffering from architects and planners who think they are gods.

For a cruel joke disguised as bedroom community look up on Google Maps for "Cidade Tiradentes, São Paulo", with satellite layer on for extra impact. Shelving 40k people in the middle of nowhere and expecting them to commute 2+ hours takes something worse than mere hubris, though...
That looks hellish. A city not built for human beings.
Another of my favourite examples of infernal city planning is Dale City, Virginia, USA.
What do you think about La Plata (my hometown)?
Interesting, I didn't know about this city...
Judging by the information I can gather by looking at it from above on Google Earth, I can see it has three very positive parameters: it's very centralized, population density seems to be high and total building percentage (ground coverage) seems to be very high. If this is true, it means that public parks should be successful and that sidewalks should have some activity.
At first glance, it looked like a city designed for cars rather than people, but on a closer look, it seems like the streets are quite narrow and even covered with cobblestones, which should keep car speed down. This is very important.
On the negative side, all the blocks are much too big, which hurts street activity (diminishing the positive effect of population and building density), and the city bears the imprint of being 'laid down by a god', planned from the beginning, which means that truly great and diverse city life in public areas is probably non-existent, despite good population density and realistic amount of 'green' space. The very strict planning leaves very little adaptability and limited breathing space for grass roots space-shaping initiatives. It seems like high demands for mobility and short deadlines for building the city have come before the needs of the people actually living there.

I visited Curitiba once. Unfortunately, it was a long long time ago, and I did not explore the city freely enough to truly get its pulse, so I do not have much to say. In any case, it was a nice place to be in, certainly more amenable than your typical major city.
(By the way, IIRC Renato hails from Curitiba, so perhaps he could give a proper picture of daily life there.)

The postponed one will be tomorrow. It would be better to dig up the slides now, but I guess it won't happen before 22:00...
Maybe it will happen at 22:41.
What a fail... >:( ::)
One week ago: the teacher said the exam will be a single complex exercise about licence fee calculations.
Two days ago: the coordinator of the post-gradual school said it will be an exam with a licence fee calculation and (in minor part) the relevant theoretical background
The exam: 70% theory, mainly not about licence contracts, 30% of the points from the calculation example
I did not learn the theoretical part (not even attending those lessons... ::)).
Result: I've solved the calculation part in 73 seconds (measured! :D), missed the theoretical questions about closed and open innovation systems (bah... WTF is that?), got nervous and finished the exam in 5 minutes. I asked the teacher to handle my test as a non-existing one, but since he's employed by our main rival at pharmaceutical IP field, he said he'll publish my results, too. It's a fail for sure, as I have only 40-45% score. So, the whole class will know my failure. I have to tell that most of the students were cheating during the exam, using their phone (watching ppt files). Believe me or not, I'm against any kind of cheats during exams, mainly because I used to be good even without any help.
Whatever the result will be, I'll do a fuckin' whitewash at the second exam, hopefully with 100% performance. I have to prove that I'm superior, being at a higher level than any lawyers or simple patent attorney candidates.

Forgot to say: later, the result was improved to the expected level - it means 10/10 flawless exams. ;D
Now I should write my IP thesis to finish this course.
I will have to take 5 exams and write 4 research essays till June, and I'm then done with my PhD absolutorium. (I'm still far from becoming a Doctor, but these have to be done this semester, otherwise, I'll be deleted from the Doctoral Database of the University.
This is one of the main reasons I'm not racing competitively this season.
Doctor Poo?

Doctor Poo?
Maybe, once. :-) The PhD thesis is a bit more further, but absolutorium is the goal till June.

Is the absolutorium a key "preliminary defence" exam done around halfway through the PhD process? (In Brazil we call that qualficação/qualification.)

PhD absolutorium (University of Miskolc):
6 successful semesters:
8 exams (for example, Physical Chemistry was one of them)
8 other courses of research, ended by a written study of 10-25 pages (literature collection, measurement evaluation etc.)
definite amount and level of publication
definite amount of teaching students
4 semesters of research at the Department
three end-term presentations (oral) and report (written)
After PhD absolutorium:
second language exam (for me, it will be German)
two papers published in journals with Impact Factor (one in Hungarian, one in English)
a master exam called "szigorlat" (complex exam of all related scientific topics)
PhD dissertation with at least 3-4 theses
PhD dissertation defence
I think it is not a "preliminary defence" yet, but it is around halfway according to my observation of other students/would-be-doctors.

It is slightly different indeed. For the programs I am familiar with here there isn't necessarily such a large list of mandatory things to be done and there is a single major examination/presentation to a panel of professors halfway through.

That is a typical Hungarian feature...

Well done! :)
When you drive home from abroad (Germany and Czech Republic) without a driving license (having lost it, got a piece of toilet paper from the Prague Hungarian embassy which is totally invalid for driving), you just start to feel that before university exams, you wasn't really afraid enough of being failed... :-X
The fate of my potential job as a researcher (now I am accidentally working at the sales department) can be decided 17th January 2025, when the public defense of my doctoral dissertation takes place... I am 41 now and if it turns out that there is no chance of being a researcher of the University of Miskolc, I'll search for a job in the industrial sector...
