Hey do you like Doom? Let's play online on http://zdaemon.org ! there are a lot of server and people to play Deathmatch o Cooperative! I hope see you there! ;)

DieselJoe

You like DOOM? I give you the tip to download JDOOM!!!
It has openGL SVGA Graphics and real 3D Monsters!!! But the same old style, it really rocks! And it is freeware! And if you have enough of the old wads goto http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?dir=levels/doom2/megawads/ or any of the many other wad-pages and download some megawads! I can recommend the "rebirth" episode!
Now download, every DOOM fan won't regret it! And it may shorten the time till DOOMIII finally will be released!

By the way, I don't get any money for this advert :D, it's just a tip for every DOOMer. I love that game!

Wow, nice graphics indeed.
But I'm still nostalgic of the 1st of all those : the original Wolf 3D.
Yes, yes, before Doom, before Spear of Destiny. The original one with its 6 episodes.
So many hours I spent on it, always afraid of hearing "HALT !" behind me when I have only 10% life left. :D

DieselJoe

The first? I can still remember another one id Software was involved in: The Catacomb 3D! A really nice fantasy-ego-shooter! :D

There were 3 episodes:
The Catacomb Abyss, The Catacomb Apocalypse and The Catacomb Armageddon!

As far as I know this was before Wolfenstein, who else knows this classic?

Really ?
I never played Catacomb games, but I've heard of them AFTER I knew about Wolf 3D.
Mmmm, I must find catacomb games and verify about that.

DieselJoe

Yes, you must look for it, and as I think about it... I guess I have to do so, too :D

I liked that Fantasy-element of the game very much. You have to fight against skeletons, mages, orks, trolls and many other... and of course the big boss... NEMESIS!
Here some screenshots:

But I think it's not freeware... :?

Very nice pictures! Imagen the technical possibilities they used to create these monsters :) I like the big green one. How old is this game?

DieselJoe

As far as I know, the first 2 Catacomb games were released in 1990 and 1991/1992. They were a sort of 2D-Shooter with view from the top.

1992/3, the first texture mapping fps game is released. Catacomb 3D!
But it had no big variety in Monsters or level design.

In 1993 the legendary (;)) Abyss/Armageddon/Apocalypse trilogy was released, I think the best of them is the first, but I never played the others as extensively as I wanted. Guess I have to make up for them, now! :D

Already found and tried Krys? Or has anyone tried JDOOM meanwhile?

I found the original 2D game here  http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=2450 but year is written 1993, not 1991. Maybe it's a new version :?:

The Catacomb 3D trilogy is shareware, only 1st episode (Abyss) available for free but I didn't tested it so far. I got it here  http://www.dosgamesarchive.com/download/game/3 . It is dated 1992.

I found also a page about Catacomb 3D - The Descent here  http://www.gamespy.com/mastersofdoom/retrospective/index4.shtml . It seems to be a different game (dashboard different).

DieselJoe

I heard that the 2D game was released a 2nd time with some little graphical changes, maybe it's that one.

Catacomb 3D - The Descent is the Catacomb 3D I mentioned above I think. Maybe again with some little changes, but I don't think it's so good, because:

I have found Armageddon and Apocalypse here:
http://www.klasyka.do.pl/index.php?con=szukaj&akcja=odczyt&nazwa=Catacomb%20Armageddon
http://www.klasyka.do.pl/index.php?con=szukaj&akcja=odczyt&nazwa=Catacomb%20Apocalypse

A polish site, but the only thing you have to know, is that "TUTAJ" seems to mean "download". Click onto it, then you will get to a site where you can choose a mirror to download.

Have fun!  :D
