I know which are the popular sports which are acknowledged well over the world, and which are only done in a few countries - that shouldn't count as greatly as the winner of the ice hockey tournament, or of the men's alpine downhill, or the ice dancing champion.

It's like when somebody said to me when I talked about the world champion Hungarian water polo team that 'and who cares about water polo?' I guess your biathlonists and luge 'drivers' are even less known than our water polo world stars, the great champions. Maybe not in Germany - but in Europe.

Akoss, it's true that some sports are more known, but I wouldn't say that some medaills count more or less. The olympic spirit is always the same.

About the most popular and spread winter sport - we all agree it's alpine skiing. That's why it's the hardest competition, not only in Olympic games. There are millions of proffesionals in that sport around the world. It means it's very hard to be champion in this. Very hard And if you want to see who is the best in alpine sking, you could watch in Torino the Alpine ski COMBINED - men, women. Combination, because it shows skills in downhill and slalom, and thats the best category to see the overall skills of the worlds best pipsqueaks in Torino:

And Croatia doesn't even have mountains with ski tracks over 1400m! What could be if we had snow?

Of course biathlon is a bigger sport than water polo.

IMO water polo is close to curling  :lol:


Another point is that who is well known is something that's hard to check or even to prove.
The only important indicator would be how much money is being earned with a certain sport.And yes the icehockey team players earn a lot

The whole discussion makes no sense.

I don't know why akoss needs to diss other countries just because JTK was a bit proud about the medals.

And the discussion which sport is more important is about as fruitless as discussing what's the best track in stunts.It's a matter of taste....

Denmark has only won one Winter Olympics medal ever - it was the Silver medal for Women's Curling in Salt Lake City 2002

I think the most important competitions are: downhill, ski jump, slalom, giant slalom, super g, ice hockey

But that's just my opinion, I am not an absolutist on the area...

Water polo is a relatively well-known and popular sport, and not only in Europe. I think not Arg should offend me with considering the sport (water polo) in which HUN are good superior to others, rather the opposite: biathlon is a sport only known among biathlon fanatic ppl apart from the countries which are really good at it (Germany, maybe Norway). It's always the best to be in the most important sports: football, handball, athletics, swimming etc.; and of the winter sports: ice hockey, alpine skiing and figure skating (which is not a sport IMO, but winners are well-known all around the world). Arg, I just attacked A BIT the Germans because when I was proud of our water polo victory, somebody hurt me A BIT when he said who did care about it. I need respect to our water polo team!

Congrats to the Kostelic family, I really admire them! I follow the skiing competitions on Eurosport (my favourite skiing event is alpine skiing), so I really know them well, I saw them many times. By the way, I have a Slovenian favourite, the beautiful GS specialist Tina Maze.

you have kept insulting other nations in the last couple of weeks(month?) and I don't get why.
You will find enough examples in this thread or the football thread ,btw laughing about other nations crappy results isn't nice either ;P

Anyways I don't really care to much as I'm -unlike you- not very nationalistic.

But imagine someone else posted stuff about hungary like you do about other nations?

For example want to call your 'Water polo team' dirty actors?
Laugh about the results of the hungarion football team?
Laugh about the fact hungary is nonexistant in winter olympics and nearly nonexistant in summer olympics?


Bottom line:
Don't do to others what you don't want to happen to yourself.

Nearly unexistant on the summer olympics? We won 8 gold 6 silver 3 (or 4?) bronze last time, finished 13th on the medal table, and we are the 8th most successful nation ever on the games. In Sydney we also had 8 golds, in Atlanta 7, in Barcelona and Seoul 10 (or 11?). So...

Hungarian football? Well, we have 3 olympic golds and 2 world cup silver, from earlier times. Now we are not so strong, but we will rise again!!!

And we are only a small and poor country. But sports mean the power of a nation!!!

Argammon, I don't know why you are taking it up as an insult, I'm just saying that our nation is better in a certain sport than an other. It certainly didn't wanted to be an insult.

About Italian water polo players (and about Spanish): if you have ever watched water polo, you maybe recognized that there's always big fight with legs, body etc. under the water. These mediterranean nations often act that somebody faulted against them. And because these nations have good sport diplomacy, the referres always eat this. Serbians play too hard, they slaughter in the pool, so besides the Hungarian team, I like the Croatian and the Russian teams or national team.
