Maradona's Argentina 1 - Scothland 0

Chulk

Argentina played a good match, always in control of the game. We started playing great football for the first 25 mins, then the team just relaxed a bit and had the ball but coouldn't create chances to score. Scotland did what they usually do, defend with 8-9 players, and counter-attack using the wings and centering the ball for his big FW (McFadden in this case). Only 1 or 2 risky moves by Scotland but nothing more while it seems that Argentina could score anytime they wanted to.
Big difference from Basile's soulless team to Maradona's intention to play fast, short, low passes. An example of it is the great goal, scored by a player Basile never liked, Maxi Rodriguez (he was Argentina's best in Germany '06, he scored that great goal against Mexico). We still have to see how the team will play when Messi, Riquelme, Agüero are available to play, but this debut was a lot different than matches Basile played against similar teams, where Argentina suffered a lot (Algeria, Norway)
Yes, it is me. No, I'm not back at racing (for now...)

What's more, Brazil also played yesterday vs. Portugal (in Gama, a city neighbour to Brasilia), and guess what, we played a great game, with flair and effectiveness: 6-2! That would be unbelieavble under any circumstances a few days ago...

With Brazil it does not seem to be too different from those issues: if the opposing team plays a deadlock, the creation/attack fails completely, even if it is Bolivia at home or something like that... ::)

Hungary - Northern Ireland 2-0

We are still a crappy team but at least I can see some improvements. Koeman seems to be a good trainer.

Nice! I loved to see Ronaldo's Portugal get kicked! (Even if it means Brazil played great football)

Very disappointing performance from the champion and the bronze medalist of the last season... :-\

Three teams from my hometown, Gyirmót has a pretty good chance to qualify to the first class. They won't but still a strong team in second class. :)

UEFA Champions League

Qualified to knockout phase (group winners with bold):

AS Roma, Chelsea, Panathinaikos, Internazionale, Barcelona, Sporting CP, Liverpool, Atlético Madrid, Manchester United, Villarreal, Bayern München, Olympique Lyon, FC Porto, Arsenal, Juventus, Real Madrid

4 - England
4 - Spain
3 - Italy
2 - Portugal
1 - France
1 - Germany
1 - Greece

No real surprise... Poor Anorthosis Famagusta, they lost by a single funny goal versus Panathinaikos (stupid reserve goalkeeper's fault, he's Hungarian...), losing the chance to continue in UEFA Cup. Zenit was the negative surprise for me: after the latest results of Russian football I expected a lot more. Arshavin is not THAT good...

To UEFA Cup (3rd place in the groups): Girondins Bordeaux, Werder Bremen, Sahtar Doneck, Olympique Marseille, Aalborg, Fiorentina, Dinamo Kiev, Zenit St. Petersburg

2 - France
2 - Ukraine
1 - Denmark
1 - Germany
1 - Italy
1 - Russia

The fallen teams: CFR Cluj, Anorthosis Famagusta, FC Basel, PSV Eindhoven, Glasgow Celtic, Steaua Bucarest, Fenerbahce, BATE Borisov

2 - Romania
1 - Belarus
1 - Cyprus
1 - Netherlands (what happened to Dutch football? :-\)
1 - Scotland
1 - Switzerland
1 - Turkey

Please note yesterday's result:

Manchester United - AaB  2-2

MU did save some players for the forthcoming league game, but look at their players:

(Tomasz Kuszczak, Gary Neville (76: Rafael), Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea, Darron Gibson (46: Ji-Sung Park), Ryan Giggs (46: Paul Scholes), Anderson, Nani, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez.)

This match was also not complete pointless. MU only won the group because Villareal lost in Glasgow at the same time.

So, at the end of the day, AaB was the only of the 4 "small teams" (AaB, BATE Borisov, CFR Cluj, Anorthosis) that made it to the 3rd place and further participation in the UEFA cup.
But we can't be quite sure.

CTG

Anorthosis is a lot smaller team than AaB but they were closer to qualify to the knockout phase (in points).
