That is correct, but because she is a child,she is generally referred to as Nijntje

Does "nijn" mean something or is it just a name?

It is an abbreviation of konijn. Meaning rabbit.

I always figured her name is actually Nijntje, but the final effect is the same, because -tje is still the part that makes it diminutive, so Nijn is (sort of maybe linguistically debatable*) a valid variation of the name.

(*= Names like Noor en Noortje can be used pretty interchangeably. But there are also female names that are the diminutive form of a male name, like Geertje in which case it would be substantially weirder. It's hard to tell where an abbreviation of the word for rabbit would fall on this scale.)
