The original plan was taking the kickoff and staying still for a minute. The referee, following orders from the bloody CBF, threatened issuing 22 yellow cards, so the players carried it out in a more amusing way.

About Brazilian protest, what was the issue?

The more immediate demands are for a more sensible season calendar - well-defined holidays and pre-season, fewer mid-week games (the Brazilian championship has Wed/Thu rounds as well as Sat/Sun ones, leading to long stretches of games every ~3.5 days), a year-long schedule for the lower levels of the pyramid, and so forth. Série A players have organized a pressure group called Bom Senso FC, and staged the protests as a reaction to not being taken seriously by the CBF.
