I've a problem with games packed in .rar files. None of them starts when I unpack them and I install them on my computer. What's wrong with them? Or is it the problem of Windows 2000?

zaqrack

W2k definitely.
Old DOS games use Dos4gw memory extender, and w2k's dos emulation can't support it (and if it could, it'd be damn slow)
NFS2 should run btw.

When the download fanilly completed through my telephone coonection, I met another challenge in running NFSSE. Trying to run the executable from Win gives a memory error. After trying alternative dos-emus under WinXP, I decided to make a bootdisk en try to run NFS from DOS. I found a handy utility with wich I could even create a BootCD, so my NTFS harddisk wouldn't be a problem. So, now I have a DOS BootCD, with NFS. I Booted, tried to run the NFS executable. It replied: This is a Windows NT executable! I could only run the joystick utility. My guess is that the executable is faulty. Could you supply the correct one?

al il professore

what a mess... try vdm sound, somtimes it solves puny problems. when u installed it, right click on the exe and choose launch with vdm sound

please tell the name of the handy utility that creates boot cd under dos (wow... must be a fantastic utility)
It is reasonable to expect that genetic influences on traits like IQ should become less important as one gains experiences with age. Surprisingly, the opposite occurs.

zaqrack

I didnt try to this NFS SE, because I have the full cd version of it, but I'll try.

NFS 2 SE worked fine, under windows 98.
It DOESN'T support Dos, Nt, 2000, Xp.

I tried VDMSound, which is a great utility indeed. It didn't work. Another good one is Dosbox, a DOS emulator.  It helped me run some other DOS games.  But it doesn't support protected mode, so dos4gw games don't work.  But when running NFS in that window it says the same thing: that it's a 'Windows NT windowed executable' litterally.  So it doesn't even reach for Dos4gw. I also tried the game on my old Win98 P133, but it gave the same error.

All the other files appear to be correct, cause I used to have the original NFS, and the files look the same. My NFS cd is broken, unfornutately. Could you upload the correct executable, please?

As for the handy BootCD utility,  you can find all you need at http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd.  You can get as deep with it as you want. I used the mostly automated options which just makes a DOS boot disk, and uses this disk to create an image which you can burn to a cd.  It automatically adds files to this image from a specified directory, so you can basically make a cd filled with DOS games and apps. Very handy indeed, especially in these times, with WinXP pushing DOS further and further into the past.

A friend of mine drove 2:13 on Zone Industrielle. How could he do this? I'm only having a 2:16...

Oh, LOL! Good old times...

For those who have NFS 2 - Lotus GT1 has the best handling. Now try the track "Outback" and tell me your best lap time. The rules are: NO OPPONENTS, CATCH OFF, NO TRAFFIC, LOTUS GT1 AUTOMATIC. :)

Mislav

My lap record following these rules is:

1:27.78

Can you beat it?

I started to play NFS 5 again. I'll try to beat my old records, because they're not so fast. :) Only Zone Industrielle record is really good, because it's the only track record made after I've adjusted the gear ratios (or Pyr?n?es, too? maybe).

My records were done: with automatic transmission, with keyboard, without cheating, without any car tuning operation programs (I heard of them), without adjusting anything in 'force feedback' section (or is it only available if you have a steering wheel?), without discovering all possible shortcuts (although I know most of them), with car damage 'ON' (possibly the most important rule), with tuned cars, also using fine tuning (expect for gear ratios in most of the cases), without driving the tracks mirrored/backwards.

Records:

Cote D'Azur 2:12,59 (911 Turbo '00)
Schwarzwald 3:02,90 (911 Turbo '00)
Pyr?n?es 2:07,71 (911 GT 1 race version)
Alps 3:12,25 (911 Turbo '00)
Autobahn 2:25,40 (911 GT 1 race version)
Auvergne 2:53,09 (911 GT 1 race version)
Normandie 2:23,75 (911 GT 1 race version)
Corsica 2:16,96 (911 Turbo '00)
Zone Industrielle 2:08,87 (911 GT 1 race version)
Monte Carlo: big shit on them

Speed record: 347 kmh-1, on Zone Industrielle track (final tunnel)

NEW RECORD:

Normandie 2:22.03

There must be some kind of tuning difference between our cars. My car sucks on primitive, unintelligent, easy tracks, on them, you are beating me by several seconds - I'll try to find out the reason.

On harder tracks, there's not too much difference, and on my favourites, the most technical tracks, I am the faster (look at the hardest track, Auvergne).
