Picking Spain is too boring. They are of course the biggest favourite, but I went for Germany. Germany vs Spain World Cup semi-final could have gone either way, and Germany is looking just as strong this year as in 2010.

This is a really, really strong European Championship... I'm almost willing to say it's the 16 strongest teams in Europe, and of course in many ways a stronger field than the World Cup, which has to include some not so great teams from other continents than Europa and South America. I can't wait to see Denmark's games in the group of death.

This group will have 6 big games:

Netherlands - Denmark
Germany - Portugal
Netherlands - Germany
Denmark - Portugal
Portugal - Netherlands
Denmark - Germany


All four teams in that group are in the top half of the 16 on the FIFA ranking list. Denmark is the lowest rated at #11. Netherlands, Germany, Portugal at #2, #3 and #7.

It's so laughable compared to group A:

Poland - Greece
Russia - Czech Republic
Czech Republic - Greece
Poland - Russia
Poland - Czech Republic
Greece - Russia

0 big games.

Yes :-( Barcelona has had big trouble scoring goals in away matches this season. Too many draws. Maybe they need a more "cynical" ugly style of play against weaker teams on foreign soil.

It's really just a 4 pt difference. Barcelona will surely beat Real Madrid at Camp Nou. And it will depend on how far they reach in UCL and the matches they have. I don't think it's over just yet.

Good to see English teams out (especially Manchester United), and in the 1/8 finals, the remaining two are also close to get eliminated... :)

Now it would be good to see Bayern losing against Basel, but it sounds really impossible. :)

Next year it would be more interesting if Juventus manages to qualify. :)

Yes, Videoton is FC Fehervar (was also known Parmalat FC). I hope they will svck, and I also hope that Györ will svck. Debrecen should be the Champion.

MTK Budapest was relegated last year to 2nd Division West (that was really same, they had good and talented young players, but the leaders of the team sold them to get more and more money, and the team got weakened). They are leading the table there at the moment.

Usrin's local team Szolnoki MÁV is the leader of 2nd Division East. Kazincbarcika is fighting there to avoid relegation to 3rd division Mátra (Northern Central) Group.

Europe League seems to be more interesting than CL - at least for me. Atletico Madrid was always one of my favorites and I think Bilbao deserves the respect for keeping the old traditions (only basque players).

I would be glad to see this final. I like Iberian teams in general (except RMA), so any finals will be relatively good for me compared to Newcastle United vs VfB Stuttgart (similar level teams, maybe it will really happen once).

That is something crazy, Debrecen and Juventus are still unbeaten as we are heading for the very end of the season. That mitigates the pain which was caused by the svck of my other favourite teams (like Kazincbarcika, Pittsburgh) and sportsmen this season.

But who are you supporting? I also kind of like both teams, but I think I'll go for the Madrid franchise because the basques are too nationalistic.

As for Chelsea vs Bayern München, I definitely hope Bayern will win that one! Chelsea sucks, and frankly I think Bayern plays great football and they have a great "club spirit", like a real club that isn't only there because some oil billionaire decided he wanted some advertisement.

About the Bilbao vs. Madrid franchise, I want Bilbao to win. Main reason is that I just love Bielsa and how his teams always play offensively, even if winning by a large margin. Other minor reason is, given the fact that one club was born as a "piece" of the other, I want the original to win.

Hey!

AGF is in an interesting situation. After being promoted to the "Superliga" last year, we are now in 5th place (of 12) in the league, with 42 points. Four rounds left for us. There's a bunch of teams with 35-39 points and who have played one match less, so it's a close battle. The interesting bit is that with the current situation, 5th place will probably be enough for Europa League qualification. So if we manage to finish 5th, we will play international games for the first time since an unsuccessful Toto Cup venture in 2001. Before that, I think our last international game was in 1997. So these could be new days in Århus. However, see if we don't mess it up during the last rounds.....

As can be seen, Kazincbarcika is in trouble. The team doesn't have much money, the players would form a mid-level team in this division, but rumours say that there's not too much motivation. The fate of the team depends on money, and there's not much of it in our region. Soon the Western and Eastern division will be united, and the team will sooner or later drop to third level (even if the farm teams of first division teams get eliminated from second division). Let's hope it won't happen this year.

About the battle on the top: Szolnok started to squander their lead, they lost 3 in a row without even scoring a goal, it seems they won't have enough money for getting promoted. Békéscsaba is uncertain, but Eger FC announced to go for the title and the division change. Yes, the city (which was visited by some Stunts räcers as well) seems to have the financial background.

Did anyone else watch the end of the Premier League on Sunday? It's the craziest thing I've ever seen in football. I don't think I've ever seen a crowd of people so ecstatic as when Aguero scored that last goal in 4 minutes overtime. At least not in Europe :-)

Debrecen is one of the most stable Fidesz bases for ages, the team is strongly supported by the mayor of the city (Lajos Kósa, considerable person in Fidesz). They will build a new stadium partly from governmental budget...

Videoton: see earlier. They were too crappy to win the championship, even with the help of refrees.

Györi ETO: Györ was one of the bigger MSZP towns before 2006. The club is rather supported by industrial and financial business sponsors (and not politicans). Although Györ turned into orange lately, our mayor - even if he's a former olympic champion and the chairman of Hungarian Olympic Committee - doesn't really care about ETO. And he has quite a weak position in Fidesz compared to Kósa.

I found a video about the match about which people still talk sometimes in Kazincbarcika...

Playoff match to get promoted to top division between Budapest Honvéd and Kazincbarcikai Vegyész, second leg. First leg was 1-0 to Honvéd in Budapest, no away goal rule that time.

Summer of 1990, the biggest chance for a small team to do something special. Péter Lipcsei is in the home squad (later played in Porto, and iconic player of Ferencváros, Hungarian national team player many times), stadion sold out. My father attended the match.

Should the 2010 method be used (just count the number of good tips), or should there be something new/more complicated? For example 3 pts for a correct tip, 2 for the goal differential correctly tipped, 1 for the correct tip of the outcome. Should we tip the medallist in advance, and get some bonus points for the correct medallist tips?

Kazincbarcikai SC managed to avoid relegation from 2nd division (NB II) Eastern group, though we lost 0-6 in Balmazújváros in the last round. 13th place reached. Relegated teams: Budapest Honvéd II (fortunately they lost in Nyíregyháza today), Rákospalotai EAC, Vecsés FC, they will play in NB III, (probably in the Danube Group).

Eger FC promoted to top division, they will play in NB I (top division) next year.

I'm very happy to see that, even if Szolnok was their main rival. But if a team fights for the 1st division with 300 silent 'fans' at their home matches, they don't deserve the victory. Sad but true: Szolnok is a basketball town, and it's not surprising that nobody wants to sponsor a football team there. (That's why they were afraid of promoting to 1st division, and lost many points in spring to avoid that.)

Really impressive. I was doubtful wether to bet on a draw or a Russian victory in my tips, but I never thought this would be the result... Maybe Czech is really that weak, I have problems tipping on their games because I have a personal love for them. Actually, I loved Nedved back when he was active and was very happy when they won Eurocup. I even use Czech Republic in every football game I play...

It's like he had two halves of bet. If he has a 100% correct bet, he earns 2 points (while those who only tipped one of the scorers as top scorer, earns only 1 point). If only one of his bets is correct (someone wins it alone), then he earns 1 point (while those who tipped him as top scorer alone, earns 2 points). I think this is the most correct scoring method.

Lessons so far:

Russia looking very strong and definitely a contender for the title. Rest of group A is a toss-up.
Denmark is in very good shape and has a chance of getting in the quarter finals
Netherlands will really have to fight for it
Ireland is dead
Spain is not as strong as in 2010
Italy is also an outsider for the title

Russia could beat the weakling Czechs, not a big deal (although I like the russian team). Their group is way too easy, so the first serious match will be the quarter-final for them.

Denmark is a good team without great stars, while the Dutch eleven is too high and mighty - result is not so surprising. But I guess DEN won't be in the best 8. Portugal with cr is a joke, just as expected.

Italy is stronger than in 2010, Spain should show up something new to beat Croatia (and no Torres, please, he's slow and selfish). Ireland did not deserve to qualify.

I think Torres has played his last minutes in this tournament. Of course the problem is that the alternatives aren't that strong either, but still they must be better.
I can't believe how much patience Torres has been given. Because he was so good in 2008-2009, both Chelsea and Spain keep using him, hoping that suddenly he will be good again, but for years it hasn't happened...

- the team which starts too good, often falls through the end... that's why I thought Germany would start with a draw against Portugal for example
- Russia looks good, but it looks the usual story... I think they will fall before the medal rounds
- I haven't seen anything special from Europe's top forwards... will a relatively no name player top the scoring list in the end maybe?
- Ireland simply too weak for this tournament... they got this ECH participation as a present after the France match two years ago (easy qualification group, lucky qualification, Estonia as playoff opponents, Kassai as referee, two Estonian red cards, undeserved Irish penalty etc.)... but oh, my God, why... even Croatia took an easy win against them
- BJ: I think at the current situation in Italian football, they haven't come for the title... this is by far the weakest Italian team I've ever seen, let alone the scandal in the country... decent performance from them, and I think a quarter final berth would be sufficient for them at the moment
- I think Spain will qualify for sure, Ireland won't, CRO-ITA for the group second place... Spain is still very strong, and the tournament is long, they can capitalize on getting into their stride later
- I can still see Germany or Spain winning the tournament
- I can still see a strong Dutch team... but they need to strive very hard now to qualify

Looking forward to the big clash between France and England tonight.

Key impressions: Italy will go further than we first thought. Germany didn't quite set the world alight against a mediocre Portugal, but Akoss' comments about teams starting too strongly makes sense in this case. Spain do look slightly more vulnerable this time, and Torres, well...  ::) (BTW, not that I follow La Liga ATM, but I have heard good things about Fernando Llorente.)

Greeks can't repeat the performance they've shown against Poland (they could do it on 1 match of 10). Czechs will catch their only chance for getting a point at the tournament.
Poland will do their best against their traditional enemy at home, but that won't be enough.

I don't expect too enjoyable matches in this group. The Dutch will be too stressed because they would really need 3 points, and that's why they won't show their best form. Germany will play for a draw successfully.

Greece, with the hope of a quarter final, will play defensively with a strong determination. The disillusioned Czechs will not have what it takes to break through. Poland with home advantage is going to fight very hard, and Russia will be okay with a draw.

Denmark - Portugal 1-2
Netherlands - Germany 0-1

Portugal is pressured to win, so they will put in a greater effort than in the last game, which will be too much for Denmark. Netherlands have shown that they are not the team they used to be, so efficient Germany will pull in a 0-1 victory with a goal in the 82nd minute.

Spain - Ireland 3-0
Italy - Croatia 1-0

Ireland is one level below nearly every other team in the tournament. The Spanish offensive had some difficulties against the strong Italian defensive, but against Irish players from obscure PL-teams, they will dominate completely and score several times. Italy will win a tight match with Croatia.

England - Sweden 1-1
Ukraine - France 0-0

England always scrambles through in the group stage. Sweden will fight for their honour and get their only point in the tournament. France is a very inefficient team, but they have not lost in 22 games and they will not lose against a brave Ukrainian team giving everything they have.

That's very persuasive. After reading this, I want to make the same predictions as you. Instead, I'll edit my own post to make post-rationalizing arguments for my own predictions, even though they are in fact almost completely arbitrary (I've predicted the 'second most likely' results compared to what I've predicted in another prediction game, which is how I actually think the matches will end)

For today:

Czech Republic - Greece 0-1
Poland - Russia 1-1.

Czech Republic seems to be the second weakest team in the tournament after Ireland...

Italy... well, they are better and more organized than it could be expected, but I still can't imagine them in the semi finals... they have Buffon in the goalie with a decent defence (who has ever seen a bad Italian defence?), but as for the offensive part of the team... they lack world class players (unlike in the past decades), it is very Pirlo-dependent, and still, we haven't talked about strikers... Di Natale is good, but not as good to be the top forward of a medal contender. And the others are not better either... Balotelli is just a clown...
Prediction: hard fought quarter final or 3rd place in the group.

It was a more exciting day than others had thought...

The Dutch are in trouble! I thought around the 60th minute that they want to get their coach fired... But then they start to put pressure on the Nationalelf... But Germany was really good today. They played like the Netherlands (...) when they needed simple but efficient offensive football, they played like FC Barcelona when they needed to possess the ball as much as possible (mid second period, it was such unusual from the German team), and they played like Italy when that was needed: they killed football and time in the end... I wonder if they can qualify, if Germany doesn't take the game against Denmark seriously, they have no chance...

When I reached the point/match ratio, I remained scoreless again...

The Dutch struggle is all part of the plan to sell the movie rights. Germany has been bribed to beat Denmark. Portugal is going to get ahead 1-0, but then in the break van Marwijk is going to give an incredibly motivating speech (well, he's going to do so in the movie version anyway, in the live version we can't hear him) and the Dutch will score 3 times, while the audience starts humming a rock ballad. Then the rest of the games untill either the finale or the next match against Germany are going to be played in montage style, where nothing happens except for a few brilliant moments they'll be able to edit together.

That's the plan, honest, they are absolutely not just really bad.

I really hope your movie version is real, because if you guys don't get your act together and win against Portugal, we are going to have to beat Germany, which is not very likely. You heard that? WIN against Portugal. Yes, WIN. That doesn't mean play good combination or run fast or make hard shots, it means score more goals than the other team, okay? So you have to put the ball into the goal AND make sure the others don't put balls into your goal. And you have to keep doing it the whole match. Well, the German coach was already thinking about giving some of his base players some rest, so a stunts could be pulled there. The Dutch team beating Portugal? Let's just say you shouldn't count on it. I'll try to convince them to make it a draw.

Then Denmark would win the group and play against Russia. Between Portugal and Germany, the goal differential would decide (Portugal wins by 2 against the Netherlands -> Germany out).

Until the 89th minute, my tips seemed quite good... now it seems I have less and less chance to win the tipping game... Evaluation of previous rounds, table, maybe later tonight, or tomorrow in the daytime.

But the most important: Italy has qualified for the last 8. That makes me happy. Though it is sad that there were three teams I like in this group, and one of them got relegated (Croatia). But ITALY reached the quarter finals! And they are a typical playoff team in my opinion - but probably they will face a strong France in next round...

Btw tipping game.

Scores before the final, without bonuses: CTG 33, Poo 30, Usrin 25, Duplode 25, Chulk 22, Bonzai Joe 20.

Earned/possible bonuses: everybody 1 point for Germany, except for CTG, who has 3. 1 point for Spain: Bonzai Joe, CTG and Chulk. Duplode and me: 2 or 7 point bonus for Spain. Usrin: 2 or 10 point bonus for Spain.

0.4 point bonus maximum for me for top scorer tipping, if no one scores his fourth goal. Others can not win anything for this kind of bonus.

4 points available at maximum for final match tipping.

Fix earned bonuses: CTG 4, Poo and Duplode and Usrin 3, Bonzai Joe and Chulk 2.

Spain: I'm fond of their (and Barcelona's)  fast and effective passes, but I can't believe that after 4 years the rivals still can't find the medicine against tiki-taka. Easy and well-deserved victory anyway (4-2-0, 12-1; really hard opponents).

Italy: positive surprise of the tournament with some luck and well organized gameplay (except in the final). Even if they play boring, the new generation of Italian football seems to be promising - I guess their club football will rise, too. Banana for Balotelli anyway! Not because I'm racist, but because he's such an annoying clown. ;D

Germany: the future dream team, they only missed some experience. They learned (under Klinsmann and Löw) to play not only effective, but attractive. I bet on them for winning World Cup 2014. On the other hand I miss some "typical Deutsch" from Nationalelf (like Kahn or Effenberg was 10 years ago).

Portugal: cr thought it will be a one man show. He was wrong. Without his egoism and selfishness Portugal would be more successful and a lot more likeable.

Czech Republic: ridiculous weak group, luck, the Russian and Portugal games showed the reality. They did not deserve to be in quarter-finals.

England: the same impotent style like in the last few years. Their only luck was getting a weak group.

France: their style improved, but there's still lack of unity in the team.

Greece: like the Czechs, but at least they were able to beat Russia.

Croatia: maybe their players are not that valuable, but CRO is always a strong squad. They would have good chance in group A and D.

Denmark: even if their fall was the reality, they played well. Denmark was stronger than any teams from group A.

Ireland: lightweight contestant in a strong group, their participation was a gift from the UEFA. Even Hungary is stronger - that's a huge insult.

Netherlands: high and migthy squad with arrogant players, luckily without team spirit. It seems they inherited the permanent looser status from Spain.

Poland: just the form on paper. They couldn't really get advantage from being the host.

Russia: I hope that the Czech game was their real face. Arshavin burned out.

Sweden: disappointing performance against Ukraine, bad luck versus England, confident victory against France. Independently from the results I think they were the strongest team in this group.

Ukraine: ambivalent feelings (beating SWE, suffering vs France, bad luck with bad refree in the last match), but they wouldn't really deserve to qualify to the knock-out phase.


It was a strong mediorce tournament in general with several enjoyable matches and only a few 0-0s. I think Euro2000 remains the best international cup forever...

Maybe. Although many commentators said Spain is boring with this neverending passing game. As for me it's not only useful, but it's still good to watch. It's a huge advantage for them to have most of the key players from the two Spanish giants (I missed Puyol very much).

How funny, Barcelona bought another tricky "dwarf", Jordi Alba. He's damned fast and quite dynamic in taking over the ball. With this performance he has a great chance to be a permanent team member.

That would be nice, but I am beginning to fear for this generation, as an stigma of serial chokers starts to hang above them. Well, when he turned 29 or something, he decided he just wanted to chill with his wife for the rest of his life, and he's still busy with that. I spotted him here in Copenhagen about a year ago and he still looked like a very well-behaved schoolboy. I think he's also on TV regularly, analyzing football.

He was pretty good for a while though. For someone like me, who grew up with football just after Michael Laudrup's greatest glory days in the late 80's and very early 90's, those two brothers were quite equal. It's only as an adult that I've found out that Michael was a much greater player.

Let's see the first class clubs:

Nowadays it's quite a popular one  compared to an average Hungarian team. Enemy: Ferencváros

Újpesti TE (purple/white) - deadly enemy of Ferencváros, with the same quality (but significantly lower number) of fanatics. As far as I remember they used to be the team of the police (or the ministry of domestic affairs?). They were pushed heavily by the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ) before the Fidesz era , now their lobby is a bit weaker (but still existing). Purple monkeys... ;D Friend: Rákospalotai EAC

Vasas (red/blue) - they are not enough characteristic to talk about them (and luckily they are in the second class now)

Btw why don't you support a team from the countryside? For example Györi ETO (green/white): no connection with any religious or political bullshit, having several (as for me: way too many) foreign players and they seem to be quite successful in the last few years. :D Enemies: Videoton, Zalaegerszegi TE

Others:

Debreceni VSC (red/white) - the most successful Hungarian team of the last 10 years, supported by the Hungarian State Railways, but it's also infected by politicans (Lajos Kósa, the major of Debrecen has quite a high position in Fidesz). Don't be surprised: the state will pay their new stadium... Enemies: Nyíregyháza, Diósgyör, Ferencváros

Videoton (red/blue, they tried to make Barca-like shirts in the close past) - see earlier, "Viktoroton" or "Fideoton", supported heavily by Fidesz. Enemy: Györi ETO

Diósgyöri VTK (red/white) - the team of Miskolc ("communist" town + high ratio of gipsies), many spectators, quite aggressive ultras. It's always hard to win as a guest there, especially since their financial situation is getting better. Enemies: Debreceni VSC, Kazincbarcika

Haladás VSE (green/white) - another "trainman" squad in Szombathely, usually they are the jumpers between 1st and 2nd class. There used to be an ETO - Haladás friendship in the past, we both hate Zalaegerszegi TE, but they are in second class now, muhahahaha. Okay, the Haladás - Zalaegerszeg rivalism is a lot deeper (deadly enemies).

Eger (shame on me, I don't know their team colors) - poor and weak newbies (destination at the end of the season is second class again), but the city is nice.

Pécsi MFC (red/black) - another nice city with not so characteristic team, I like them anyway

Paks (green/white), Lombard Pápa (?), Kaposvár (green/white), Siófok (erm... yellow/blue?), Kecskemét (purple/white) - listfillers in my eyes

Well, that was interesting to read about :-) It's just that none of the teams sound very sympathetic. ETO and MTK sound neutral. You know how much I despise Fidesz, so from now on I'm going to hate Debrecen as well as FC Féhervar (who I am also going to annoy by not calling them Videoton).

I'll write about Danish football clubs also, if anyone's interested...

Well, so in Denmark, we have

FC København, a.k.a. FCK (white) - the biggest team with the most money, situated in central Copenhagen. I would say the Ferencváros of Denmark, but the club is from 1994, when there was a merger between KB (the first football club in Denmark) and other local club B1903. This team has a reputation of being 'corporate' and arrogant, but they have been the best team in Denmark for many years, even though they missed the championship last year (by 1 point).
Enemies: Brøndby, AGF

Brøndby: (yellow/blue) traditionally big club with some impressive results in the 90's. They have been bleeding since the middle of the 00's and are currently in danger of being relegated to the 2nd division for the first time since 1985. This is the 'working class' club, located in suburban Copenhagen. Matches between Brøndby and FCK are called 'new firm' because for a while in the 00's, Brøndby and FCK were about equally strong and better than the rest. FCK and AGF also have crazy hooligans, but Brøndby's are just a little crazier. They also have the best fans in the league. Breeding ground of the best Danish players: Peter Schmeichel, Michael Laudrup, Brian Laudrup and current star Michael Krohn-Dehli.
Enemies: FCK, AGF

AGF: (white/blue) my team, from Aarhus. The oldest (still existing) team in Denmark, dating from 1880. AGF is a very proud club with history and traditions, but the fact is that we have sucked since 1997. Maybe we are a bit too proud, thinking we don't need to work hard to beat the others. Known for some nazi fans, but really there aren't so many. Second best and most faithful fans in the country, after Brøndby's. Even when we were in the 2nd division, there was a high attendance.
Enemies: Brøndby, FCK, FC Midtjylland, AaB, Randers

AaB (red/white, stripes) from Aalborg in northern Jutland. Consistently strong club with a decent CL performance in 2008. Also a respectable and old club. I can't like them because they're competitors of AGF, but I respect them.
Enemies: AGF, OB

OB (blue/white, stripes) from Odense. The last of the five 'real football clubs' in Denmark. They have delivered consistently strong results, until last year. Eliminated Real Madrid from the Champions' Cup in 1994.
Enemies: FCK, AaB

FC Midtjylland, a.k.a. 'the wolves'. New club, from Herning/Ikast, central Jutland (club name means 'central Jutland') (black/red). Founded in 1999 by a merger of Herning and Ikast.  Even though they have only worn their black and red outfits for 13 years (unlike KB and B1903, Herning and Ikast were small clubs with very few fans before the merger), they feel very high and mighty because they nearly always finish near the top of the league. This is the 'peasant' club of Denmark.
Enemies: AGF, Randers

FC Nordsjælland, (deep red) from a small town called Farum, 20 km north of Copenhagen. Finally some politics here. This club was brought out of obscurity around 2000 by a the right-wing mayor of Farum, Peter Brixtofte, who was then jailed for fraud (basically spending ridiculous amounts of taxpayer money on very expensive wine). After being a weak team for almost 10 years, they suddenly got good. They now have a strong squad with many marginal national team players, and last year they managed to win the championship, which means that because of FCK's performances in recent years, they qualified directly to Champions' League.
They suddenly have many fans now, but when I saw them in Aarhus in 2006, there were exactly two FC Nordsjælland fans present.
Enemies: Lyngby

AC Horsens (yellow), traditionally a crap club that nobody's heard of, suddenly they have emerged to the best league, at the same time as Horsens authorities are trying to brand the (small, uninteresting) city by presenting huge music names (U2, Madonna, Depeche Mode and Bob Dylan played there recently).
Enemies: Vejle, AGF

Lyngby (blue): old and once great club from the Copenhagen area, currently an 'elevator team', going up and down between 1st and 2nd league. Enemies: FC Nordsjælland.

Randers (bright blue): the ones I hate the most. From Randers, close to Aarhus, but with no history or tradition. Entered the 1st league (Superliga) some time in the 00's and suddenly got some fans. Terribly cocky, in the same way as FC Midtjylland.
Enemies: AGF, AaB

SønderjyskE (bright blue like Manchester City): small club from southern Jutland with few fans, known for playing very defensive football.

Silkeborg (red/white): reasonably respectably team from central Jutland.

Esbjerg (blue/white, stripes): boring team from western Jutland, but it's okay that they're there because it's the 5th largest city in the country. This is the 'fisherman' football club of Denmark.

Yes. In my opinion, Seaman was a crappy keeper. I never knew why he was considered so good.

But they got what they deserved from Ferencváros. This is the first time in my life when I'm pleased by a Ferencváros victory in a domestic match... Videoton - Ferencváros 1-2, Videoton could score only from a 'gift' penalty - while Ferencváros was denied a penalty. Of course these 'mistakes' of the referee are not surprising...

Taking 6 points for granted on home matches against Andorra and Estonia, and taking into consideration that Turkey already has 3 defeats, yes, the Romania matches can be decisive. 4 points needed against them, then a 6-1-3 record can be enough to be there in the playoff stage (any points in Turkey and in the Netherlands would be a gift).

It is hard to measure how strong Brazil is, as they are not playing official matches (only minor friendlies). Anyway, Brazil in WC is always a favourite because they rarely play seriously on qualifiers but are usually at their best in WC.
Argentina has some serious defensive issues, but our attacking foursome (Di Maria - Messi - Higuain - Agüero) scores on a high percentage on counter-attacks and that pretty much decides every match. Venezuela is the former weakest team growing year after year, but I think they will fall barely short and won't qualify for next WC.
Paraguay, Bolivia & Peru have no real chances to qualify unless they take a 180º turn on their performances.

Probably harsh-defensive-not so technically gifted teams (Switzerland, Ukraine, Greece and such) and of course African teams would have an edge because they are usually physically stronger than the rest.

I think Messi is the best in history. He's way more effective than any other forward and he assists better than most midfielders. You can't compare the players from different era, because several circumstances changed a lot. The game is faster, players need more stamina, higher speed, they pay a lot more attention on physical training, etc. As for me, the best players ever are Maradona, Messi, Pelé, Puskás and Zidane. cr won't ever enter this club. He's not even close to that.

Exactly why I think Messi is the best. In an era of physical, less technique-demanding football, with defense being much more important than ever, being a player that no defense can stop is much harder. Of course it was easier to score when teams played 2-3-5 many decades ago than now where most team play 4-4-2 or even 4-5-1 so beating every scoring record there is, definitely makes you the best.

Still I think Maradona was not better than Messi, but he definitely is greater. Maradona is the most "Tsubasa like" player there ever existed. He faced stronger teams and really great players, but somehow he always managed to win despite being injured, having the refs clearly against his team and being on a weaker team...

What I find striking in your examples is the contrast between Kaká and Adriano: the former is a model professional and adeeply religious man; the other, an undisciplined, psychologically troubled player. Water and wine, and yet both were spent before turning 30. I don't think Neymar will suffer from the same fate (barring misfortune with injuries); the real question is whether he will rise to the levels everyone seems to expect him to, or else follow the footsteps of that previous Santos superstar, Robinho.

I wouldn't put Kaka in this group... We know the others burnt out because they loved party, alcohol and sex more than anything else.
IMO Kaká did not burn out, he simply faded because he chose to go to RM even if it meant not playing often or RM style not suiting him as well as Milan FC did. He couldn't keep his rhythm and his skills at his best in RM. I guess it happens when a player that good does not play regularly enough.
I remember something like that happened with Saviola when he went to RM. He was always over .4 goals per game before he went to RM. There he only scored 5 goals in 26 matches during 2 seasons (most of them coming as a sub).
Sometimes players don't take a team's style or how much will they play there into account when they get transferred to other clubs, and that ends up harming their careers many times.

We don't suck, it was just a crappy not-motivating match to play. Those friendlies we only play because money is good. Think about it, if you were any of the guys that are usually in the starting eleven of Argentina's NT (Romero; Zabaleta, Fernandez, Rojo; Mascherano, Di Maria; Messi, Agüero), would you really play seriously against such a weak team?
